Default Disney's Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray out before '08?

Disney's Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray out before 08!

While attending Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour in Seattle, PSU had the chance to talk with some representatives about upcoming Disney Blu-ray titles. One of the titles being Sleeping Beauty.

Cool. I'm really interested in seeing what they can do with the older animated films on hi-def. Of course, I hope they have plans for the rest of the Pixar stuff. I haven't bought any of the other computer animated films on Blu, mainly because they're just not my cup 'o tea. But, man, the Toy Story films, Bug's Life, etc etc. I can only imagine how gorgeous that's going to look.

Holy crap. The article says they're going to get it out before Christmas? I'll believe it when I see it...

But if it is, it's mine!

While this is awesome news that this movie is coming out period, I think that perhaps Disney should have choosen something a little more contemporary to release to generate more sales...

Sleeping Beauty is a classic, but I do not think that it will cause a huge desire for people to invest in high definition media.

I think Disney should have perhaps looked at doing something with Aladdin, The Lion King, or Beauty and the Beast....

These three animated movies were probably the last widely accepted successes in the traditional animation sense from Disney, and extremely popular amongst a multi-generational gap...

This is a 65mm source shot in technicolor.

There is no better title in the Disney animation library to show off Blu.

sorry but i think that it being out before 08 is highly unlikely seeing as Disney just said that Underdog would be their last Blu for 07... never know though

Err... no.

The wording in that article is deceptive. The Disney rep meant Christmas of 2008, not 2007. Sleeping Beauty is the next planned autumn Platinum Edition title (after Jungle Book this year and 101 Dalmatians next spring), at which time it will bow simultaneously on BD. Accompanied by a sizable marketing blitz, I'm sure.

Much agreed. I mean, even the "Make it Blu!" trailers on some recent DVDs would get you excited about Blu-Ray.

Also, considering the great use of color in the movie plus how beautiful the DVD release was, I've been looking forward to this release since I first heard it was coming to Blu-Ray.

As for contemporary titles to boost sales for the holiday season, nah. The Disney Princess line is HUGE business right now and Aurora plays a big part in that franchise. That equals big bucks. Plus, we've already got a lot of the contemporary animation between the CGI Feature Animation (Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons), Secret Lab (Dinosaur), and many of the Pixar films.

Let me tell you, I experienced a technicolor film theatrically for the first time about a month ago.

Even though it wasn't a technicolor print.....I can see why everyone raves

I believe Lassetter is in the process of shutting down the CGI divisions and merging them into Pixar. I don't think he wants competition with his baby

He wants the Walt Disney name to be synonymous with cel animation. And rightfully so

it is a CARTOON. you can not make those old disney movies into high definition because they are drawn-animated. yes, you can make the colors more vibrant, but not any more vibrant than you can if u wanted to in a dvd, but that is all....the dvd will look just as good upconverted.

Having collected the Platinum line I'll be quite surprised and pleased if this hits BD before year's end.

Sleeping Beauty looks pretty marvelous upconverted but I have to believe a true HD presentation would be stunning. It's probably the single greatest production design in the studio's history, and it's largely the product of one man, Eyvind Earle. There's a vast amount of detail in this film; it's not merely a matter of color saturation. I bet on a large enough monitor on BD you could almost start making out brush strokes...which would be a helluva way to teach scenic painting...

It's actually shot in Technirama (anamorphic shot VistaVision area 35mm: 24 x 36mm) and optically decompressed for 65mm

Since it's sequential b/w Technicolor the total area of every frame is approx. inside 3 x 24 x 36 = about 2400 square millimeters, 10 times the area of a LOR negative frame (240mm)

There is no better title in the Disney animation library to show off Blu.

(yes, I copied that )

Not to criticize this post, since there is certainly a element of truth. But do some internet searches and you will find a recent article where John Lasseter states that Disney will be returning to traditional cell-based hand drawn "classic" animation "in a big way" in addition to CGI titles from Pixar.

These carry more weight than you think.

"The Princess and the Frog" will be the first of these releases coming in 2009.
