Default Receiver/speakers help

Just need some general info. I'm looking into getting a new receiver hopefully next year, if my budget can handel it. Anyways my current A/V receiver is a Sony 5.1 Dolby DTS, (not sure what model off hand) which is about 8 yrs old, a Sony sub, center speaker and my main floor speakers are Sansui I have no idea how old these are(there were free) I think these are 100 watts...still sounds good to me and
Insignia 6-1/2" Bass-Reflex Bookshelf Speakers from Best Buy. My main question is if I buy a budget or mid-range 5.1 or 7.1 suround receiver what kind of sound can I expect out of the speakers? As of right now I don't have any behind the couch or chair, no room for them. Just the floors and bookshelves.. Just want some good clean sound when I play my BD's. Which is not as often as I like. Guys I need some advice on this.

One of the things you should do and since you will have the time till you make your final move ( its not one of those things that you will be buying next week ) is to go out and listen them as much as you can , all receivers have a different sound . what changes will you be doing after buying your new receiver ?? Will you buy a new set of speakers , what would work best with a new set of speakers and so on . One thing is for sure .. You will get a receiver that decodes the new audio formats and it will be a repeater and not a pass truth if your existing receiver as HDMI .

you should try to listen to receivers and see what sounds good to you....however remember what speakers they were on that it sounded good to you on, because it may not be the same on your current or new speakers you buy. Personally Id buy new speakers first... but thats just me.
