Default does pausing damage a player

or reduce its lifespan?

Sometimes I have it paused for days at a time (disabling power saving)

I wouldn't recommend pausing it routinely for long periods of time. The purpose of the pause control is obviously for shorter times periods when the occasion calls for it like going to the bathroom, make a snack or a drink, answer your cell or whatever. Pausing it for long periods of time was probably not the manufacturer's intended purpose for the pause control. Thus it was built and designed for intermittent use, and certainly not for extended periods of time.
Some well built players may not be harmed. Cheaper ones, well let's say you get what you pay for.

I've gotta ask, why is your movie on pause for days at a time? Why not just turn it off?

Turn it off, I pause my player all the time usually for 10 minutes or less. Plus by turning it off you would save money on your power bill!

Then you go to the scene selection and choose the correct one. Then seek.

also I think the heat of the player may actually damage the disc.

I hope you turn your tv and other connected equipment off too. Leaving a tv on while a movie is paused keeps the same static image on screen that can lead to burn-in and ghost images on your screen.

It's not worth any damage to your equipment and increase in electrical bill just to remember what part of the movie you were last at.

As stated above, the heat could potentially do some damage. Additionally, you need to be aware that if a machine was built to last around, say 2000 hours, that the 2 hour movie you were watching just ate around 36 hours of it's lifespan because you had it paused. Power save modes (sleep) may help protect against both, but you are still slowly consuming it's usable life cycle.

Just turn it off. You'll save energy and make your player last longer.

What I'm doing now is turning off the player (it's a PS3) at night. It will still be paused sometimes hours at a time but I'm hoping that won't hurt it.

I don't turn off the tv since I've heard that can damage it so instead I rely on the screen saver or I just turn the contrast & brightness all the way down to save the back light.

where the hell are you getting this from? Turning off a TV will damage it?!

If you leave the screen on for hours you're more likely to suffer from burn in than anything bad that can happen from turning the tv on or off.

I have had my TV for 4 years, I have turned it on and off at least once a day and it's still working fine

If that were true, television failure rates would rise to epidemic levels.

This has to be one of the dumbest threads I've ever seen!
Let me understand this correctly, you leave your PS3 on pause for days...just because you don't remember to bookmark?? Yet you have the frame of mind to start a thread about it??

How about this: Remember to bookmark, or just remember where you left off.
