Default PSP Digital Comics ending

No more updates after this week!! It's pretty much the only thing I use it for these days and now it's being canned because the team are moving on to "other sony devices". I won't mind if it becomes available for PS3 and I can re-download my purchased stuff, but otherwise this is a real kick in the teeth for all the cash I've spent over the last couple of years.

It makes you wonder why anyone bothers to buy into these services when there is no guaranteed future!

I agree. I was so tempted many times to start buying into this service, but the questions of access to the content in perpetuity and the availability of new content into the future just kept me from making the leap. I guess I'm glad it did.

I'll just copy and paste Shin's and my comments from the main Vita thread.

Well, we know what one of those devices will be.

Actually, I'm guessing that it's for the S1/S2 and Xperia Play. (the push for why it's happening now I mean)

DC comics is relaunching everything in September with a new #1 and starting full day and date digital distribution. They (DC) also indicated that the platforms/companies being supported are Comixology, the Apple app store, and the PSN.

The timing lines up perfectly. DC was the only one doing any day and date releases at all on the PSP store. The S1/S2 should be out in the fall and should be playstation certified.

My guess is that we're going to see a Playstation-certified comics app that will work with the PSP (and then Vita) also.

I may be wrong, I just can't imagine that DC talked to Sony about day and date and the relaunch and then Sony decided they'd let Apple and Comixology split the whole market share for a few months and jump in a few months later with issue 4 or 5.
I'd hang tight for at least a little while and see if there is an upcoming announcement that they can't give us yet. I have a feeling that the PSP won't be left out in the cold when they are ready to launch it on other platforms.

Digital Comics for all devices is a must; with so few specialist comic shops left in the world, the only way for mass sales is to offer them online in as many formats as possible. I'd love to see a PS3 comic reader, but I'd be just as happy to get a decent reader on my Android phone; I tried one, but it was awkward to use, not as friendly as the one on PSP

I can see why they're expanding to other devices (presumably PS3, PSV, and Android through Qriocity). I'm not 100% sure why they're ceasing the updates on PSP though, maybe not enough sales? I'm hoping in the future and on the other devices they'll have motion and interactive comics for sale.

I'm REALLY hoping the PS Vita not only gets digital comics, but that it is a part of the new DC relaunch, where digital publishing will occur day-and-date with physical releases every Wednesday. That's what I'm crossing my fingers for. I really don't want to have to get a smartphone or an iPad for those.
