Default ps3 price drop?

I was just wondering why sony hasn't lowered the price of the ps3 or announced the 40gb model? This would be a horrible Christmas for the ps3. I hope sony does somthing smart this year with the ps3. Who cares if the ps2 gets dropped to $100. I own a ps3 and love blu-ray but sony needs to do something.

It will always be able to do that because they have started software emulation.

I wouldn't expect a price drop until the 60gig are all but gone and the shopping season starts to pick up. Probably in November.
$399 - 40gig
$499 - 80gig

Software backward compatibility doesn't cost anything to manufacture.

edit: too late.

This would be a good move, although some people might get upset that they spent 499 on 60gb's when they could have saved 100 dollars by buying a 40 gig. But i don't regret my purchase. Just sad i didn't get to buy the system recently when that Amazon 7 blu ray movie deal was happening (5 from rebates, and 2 from Amazon themselves)

Physically No, as no chips and such, but R&D to implement and improve software emulation will still cost money. A team of programmers still had to put in countless work hours to develop the emulation layer of the PS3, then you have to keep improving it to improve Backwards compatibility.

sony is basicaly weighing the fact that after a while PS3 gamer will not need Backwards compatibility. The can still offer backwards compatibility for now with reduced costs, plus they can sell off some of their PS3 manufacturing plants to offset their Losses due to PS3 R&D, manufacturing, and price cuts.

bottom line nothing is ever free.

I really hope they do, they need something to spark sales for the holiday season. I know a few people in my work center that say they will buy one when the price drops. $399 is most definitely a reasonable price.

The thing is that the software emulation is already implimented. It is in all the 80gig PS3's and in all of the European PS3's. There is no extra cost for Sony to include it which is why it will never be discluded from future PS3's no matter what the SKU. In other words, Sony already put in the R&D so it isn't like they need to reinvent the wheel for each new PS3 they put out.
