Seth MacFarlane and Akiva Schaffer are officially courting Liam Neeson for Paramount’s “Naked Gun” remake. The “Taken” actor is in talks to lead the modern version of the ’80s slapstick film, Variety confirms.

That’s meta as hell:

Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic actor until a single role in M*A*S*H* then he jumped right into comedy with Airplane!

Neeson’s rare comedic roles include A Million Ways to Die in the West, a serious role in The Orville, and a brief skit with Key & Peele.

Don't forget Neeson's amusing cameo in TED 2:

He is mainly known for his serious work, but he's done plenty of comedy in his career.

Remaking The Naked Gun is a bizarre idea & Leslie Nielsen is way too closely connected to the series to be replaced, but I'd be in for a decent cop movie spoof. Neeson playing it straight in a really stupid comedy could be gold.

I think he might be a great fit. Remember that Nielsen's schtick was playing everything so serious, it was absurd. I can definitely see that in Neeson's straight man technique in clips like this one and the Ted 2 cameo.

Liam Neeson in a comedy by the guy that made Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping?

*sees Seth McFarland as producer*

Wouldn't Trey Parker make sense to produce this? He was already involved in a David Zucker production:

I think people are forgetting what made these films so funny. Having actors put in comedic situations and delivering their lines of dialogue exactly the way they did in countless “serious” movies prior was hilarious.

All Neeson has to do is play it just like his last 20 thriller flicks and big laughs will be coming!!

In theory, yes.

But it's a VERY fine line to walk on, and one that needs to be shared by writers, actors and director(s). Don't hit that sweet spot, and the result will be dull.

But hey, if they manage to pull it off, I'm all for it. The world needs a truly hilarious comedy.

Make it all new material. No remakes please. Liam Neeson, with a serious tone, might be able to pull it off by some chance as a serious actor in ridiculous situations and a sense of being dumb to the reality of the situation, as the brilliant Leslie Nielsen so expertly did in the Naked Gun films.

Naked Gun 10/10 for laughs IMO. I have never laughed that much for a film ever when I saw it in theaters. It still makes me laugh today. Brilliant stupid comedy.

Naked Gun 33 1/3rd 9/10 for laughs. Great stuff.

Naked Gun 2 1/2 The intro with the banquet was hilarious, but the rest wasn't as funny IMO. Good even so. 7/10

Naked Gun Files of Police Squad: 8/10 6 funny 30 minute episodes in the style of the films, made before the movies.

There are a few other films Nielsen starred in that were in the Frank Drebin style of Naked Gun that were funny, like 2001 A Space Travesty. It was crude but hilarious.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. Neeson's a talented actor, so I bet he can potentially pull it off if he's as sharp as Nielsen was (who died at 84 years old in 2010 from pneumonia).

Neeson is about 61 or so now. Cool if he's open to the project.

Exactly, I think this is promising. The whole comedic point was that people were playing their roles in over the top hyper real comedic situations with razor seriousness. Nobody should be winking at the screen, in on the joke or be aware of the film they are in.

I was never a huge fan of the Naked Gun movies (only saw the second one), but I like Liam Neeson as an actor. If done the right way, this could be a "screwy goofball" kind of comedy, and I'd be up for that.

If they don't do it as a remake but a continuation of the previous films it could be fine.

Liam Neeson. He's funnier than Ed Helms.
