STORY

Empire City was a run of the mill metropolis, until one day a massive explosion rips through six square blocks of its bustling downtown real-estate, seemingly leveling everything and everyone in its path. Yet after the dust had cleared, at the center of the blast crater is a lone man, Cole. He is in a coma, but has survived the event and neither he nor the world will ever be the same.

An everyday guy doing his best to make ends meet, Cole had been a bike messenger. Just before the blast he had been sent to ground zero to deliver a package. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, he awakes to find that somehow he has gained strange electrical powers. Empire City is in shambles though. Riots have erupted, breeding chaos and emboldening powerful criminal gangs hungry for power and profit. In the panic that follows the city is quarantined from the mainland, and television broadcasts packed with damning security camera footage link Cole to the scene of the explosion. Cole is now a wanted man, but his extraordinary electricity-based powers and perhaps a semblance of responsibility for the well-being of Empire City are growing. Who is really responsible for the blast though? As an evolving mystery unfolds, Cole must learn how to wield his newfound powers as he searches for the real culprits behind the blast in an attempt to rescue Empire City from complete anarchy.

SOUNDTRACK

Created by popular underground electronic musician Amon Tobin, and composers Jim Dooley, Mel Wesson, JD Mayer and electric cellist Martin Tillman to encapsulate the gritty and decimated nature of Empire City. The contributing musicians threw out all conventional standards of traditional music production, turning instead to real-life objects and materials found in urban environments such as trashcan lids and water jugs - bungie cords were stretched across a concert bass drum and strummed, wire brushes were beat on a suspended tuba and shakers were constructed of broken glass.

CHARACTERS

"I am a mystery to myself… What made me who I am?"
COLE: Cole's transformation from urban slacker to super-human may bring him power, but it also forces him to confront difficult moral questions. As he watches his hometown unravel in the aftermath of the explosion, he finds himself torn between competing factions, some of which do not have Empire City's best interests in mind. Will he prove to be the city's deliverance – or its downfall?

ZEKE: Cole's best friend, Zeke has a taste for conspiracy theories and a deep distrust of the government. As chaos envelopes Empire City, Zeke comes to believe that it's every man for himself, and that the only way out of this mess is for everyone to get super-powers.

TRISH: Cole's girlfriend is smart, beautiful and loving – but even her fierce loyalty cannot survive the tragedies of Empire City. After losing her sister in the blast that gives Cole his powers, she's heartbroken. Blaming Cole for the death of her sister, Trish spends her time doing what she can to help the people still trapped within Empire City.

MOYA: An FBI agent, Moya tasks Cole with finding a device called the Ray Sphere and locating her missing husband, a fellow FBI agent named John. If Cole helps Moya, she will clear his name and get him out of the city.

REAPERS: Before the blast, the Reapers were a scattered group of drug dealers and street thugs. Now, with no law enforcement policing this vulnerable city, the Reapers have grouped together to take control. As a highly organized and lethally armed criminal syndicate, they are intent on spreading chaos throughout Empire City. Like Cole, some of those Reapers were exposed to the blast and have developed unique powers of their own.

DUST MEN: Prior to the blast, the Warren was home to Empire City's homeless population. After the blast, those homeless people were organized into a group called the Dust Men. Because of their lack of social status before the blast, the Dust Men are hellbent on getting "theirs" by any means necessary, even if that means the wholesale slaughter of innocent civilians.
The Dust Men, imbued with a variety of super powers and led by a mysterious and extremely powerful figure, sow havoc throughout the Warren. In addition, under the orders of their leader, the Dust Men are using slave labor to construct a massive tower that looms over the entire borough. The purpose of the tower is unknown.
FIRST SONS: A mysterious and centuries-old organization, the First Sons, fled to America in the 17th century to avoid persecution as witches and warlocks. Once in America, the First Sons continued their research into telekinesis, channeling, and other electric-based abilities. With the arrival of Richard Tate in 1892, the First Sons started merging Edison-era technology into their research, in the hope of augmenting their mentalist abilities.
The First Sons control the Historic District of Empire City and use their devastating technology to destroy anyone that challenges them.
DALLAS: Dallas, known to the scared citizens of Empire City as the Voice of Survival, began a pirate television broadcast after the quarantine was imposed. Alternating between broadcasting helpful information and propaganda aimed at undermining Cole, Dallas is a constant presence in the city.

POWERS

Cole is a living human dynamo, drawing electrical energy from the city's grid and channeling it outwards in diverse ways. He recharges his powers by directly tapping into the power grid via street lights, downed cables, car batteries, etc. But Cole is not omnipotent.

Empire City's infrastructure is crumbling and blackouts are common. If Cole strays into an area where power has been lost, his abilities dry up – and his vulnerability skyrockets.

Cole's powers include:
  • Lightning Bolt – Let fly with high voltage bolts, wounding or killing enemies, destroying objects or powering up machines.
  • Shockwave – Create a wave of high-impact energy that throws cars into the air, or slams enemies off of rooftops.
  • Bio Leech – Overpower an enemy, then use this attack to suck the electrical energy from the neurons in their brain.
  • Pulse Heal – Heal the wounded with a short burst of electrical energy applied direct to an injured person's chest from Cole's hands.
  • Contact Powers – A trio of powers that let Cole empower civilians to help him in battle.
  • Shock Grenade – An explosive ball of electrical energy that explodes with impressive force, damaging everything caught in its blast.
  • Lightning Storm – Take advantage of charged particles in the air and summon a colossal lightning strike.
  • Precision – An advanced ability that lets Cole briefly slow down time, zoom in on an enemy, and blast them with a super-charged lightning burst.
  • Arc Restraint – A non-violent way of dealing with villains, this ability uses electricity to bind an enemy's hands and feet together and pin them to the ground.
  • Thunder Drop – Leap from the top of a high building and hit the ground extra hard, creating an electric shockwave that sends people and objects flying.
KARMA

One of the most important aspects of inFamous is its Karma System. Depending on Cole's actions, he consciously shifts into either a Good or Evil Karmic State, and this is more than a superficial change. Nearly every aspect of the game, from the way pedestrians react to Cole, to the powers he can use and upgrade, to Cole's appearance, and even the story, is impacted by Cole's Karma.

By focusing on either Good or Evil Karma, Cole's body actually changes in not only appearance, but also in how it manifests and manipulates electricity. If Cole has Good Karma, his powers are more electron-based; however, if he's Evil, his powers are more positron-based. This results in wildly different upgrades for his powers.
