Unhappy 4 Recently bought titles which won't play. Help/suggestions please?

Hi all,

Four blu-rays I bought recently are not playing to varying degrees. First off, I would like to point out that of the 37 blu-rays I own, these are the only 4 with which I have an issue. I have an LG GGW-H20L blu-ray drive in my PC, which is the only way I have to watch blu-rays. I use the playback software which was bundled with the drive, in other words Cyberlink PowerDVD version 7.3.
The four titles in question are:

-American Psycho (US release from LionsGate): the disc takes a shit ton of time to load, and after it finally does, it won't go past the LionsGate intro logo at the beginning of the disc. PowerDVD just freezes and eventually crashes and I don't have access to the menu or anything. This is the only disc I've seen other people have had the same problems with by searching on Internet, however I've found no solution to the problem. I own other, more recent LionsGate discs (The Arrival & My Bloody Valentine 3D) which play perfectly.

-My Sister's Keeper (US release from Warner Home Video): the disc loads up fine, and the opening "Warner Blu-Ray promotional montage" plays just fine. Then the movie automatically starts, and barely a few seconds after, PowerDVD crashes.

-The Marine 2 (US release from Fox) & Ghajini (Indian release from Big Home Video): the exact same problem with both these discs. PowerDVD starts up, but instead of taking me to a menu or starting the film directly. A message simply appears on screen informing me more or less that the disc was manufactured to the highest quality, that blu-ray is a new technology and that I should go to bluray-disc.com for more information. I own other discs from Fox (27 Dresses and The Simpsons Movie) which play just fine.

That's all the info I can provide, at least off the top of my head. My player has the latest firmware update (YL05). As for PowerDVD, the last time I tried to update it, none of my discs would work (as in sound but no image) so I reverted back to simple 7.3. Weird, I know. And once again, All 33 other blu-rays I own work just fine. But still, if you can be of any help, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I would have to say a Power DVD firmware update is needed?

Who is discussing software to rip blu-rays? I'm an honest customer who buys official legal blu-rays, I'm not ripping anything. What the hell is this?

As for anyone actually interested in helping me, I managed to get The Marine 2, My Sister's Keeper and Ghajini to work with a little tinkering, but still no-no for American Psycho. As has been said before, I've noticed other people all over the web have been having the same problem with this disc, whether they play it on a PC, a PS3 or a regular dedicated player. Thus one disc out of 37 which won't work. Anyone have an idea, please don't hesitate. The reviewer on this site managed to review it so there must be some way, right?

Have you tried the latest version of PowerDVD Ultra? You can "evaluate" it for 30 days. Expensive? Yes, at least in my opinion.

Why don't you try using a different DVD playing software? You stated right from the beginning that these were four BDs that you recently purchased, so I don't see a problem discussing software. There are some free media players that you can download that are legal like VLC and Media player classic that can be used to play real BDs. Even Microsoft's new media player I think will play a real BD. You could also try playing your Psycho disc in a real BD player just to make sure it is not defective (and so you would want to return it to the store you purchased it from!).

I don't think that comment was directed toward you, but it was a forewarning to all would be respondents.

PowerDVD 7 is quite old, and the company probably isn't releasing any further updates for that version, thus you may need a newer version of the software to play newer titles.

I'm never gonna pay for BD player software, because you just get screwed with all the BD+ update and so on...
I've found a ''less official'' solution to obtain PowerDVD.

Yes, it's a bad thing and not allowed, but I'm the last one who wants to get into the crap the topic starter has to deal with.

I'm bad, but not retarded!

Try the trial version of Arcsoft Total Media Theater. I use it (the Asus Version for the HDAV Slim) and it works well with me.

Thanks everyone, like I said, I managed to get three of the discs to work, but not American Psycho. Neither updating PowerDVD, not trying Total Media Theater, nothing, the disc just won't go to the menu. Sure if I go in the disc I can directly play the video files, but that's not what I pay for when I buy a blu-ray. So, I just went and returned to the store and exchanged it for a pristine, working copy of My Cousin Vinny! So all's well considering the Australian release of American Psycho is apparently superior anyway, but I'm still gonna drop LionsGate a line cause it's still unacceptable.
