Default New PS3...

Here is the article on Megagames.

Description
"As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace, so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise," explained Sony UK boss Ray Maguire.

"So it was a big decision and we know it is a very emotive subject as lots of people think that backwards compatibility is high on the agenda and yet few really use it."

Another Article from megagames.

Description
The worst kept secret in console history has been officially announced. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced details of its new Playstation 3 model that will launch throughout the SCEE territories on 10th October 2007 at a selling price of €399.

The new PS3 will launch in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.

Along with an ever expanding line-up of PS3 titles (a total of 65 titles tracking across all genres by Christmas), the new PS3 is equipped with a 40GB HDD and includes all the features central to the High Definition entertainment experience; High Definition Blu-ray Disc movies, SIXAXIS wireless controller, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity, all powered by the Cell Broadband Engine, the digital heart of PS3.

The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port. The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles.

The existing Starter Pack, comprising a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, an additional SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles will be reduced in price to €499 and will remain on sale only until stock is depleted. In the UK and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a separate in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3

"The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners," said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable High Definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system."

Agreed, When I first got my PS3 I thought I'd be playing my PS2 games all the time...Since the first day I had it my PS3 has never seen a PS2 game since.

Backward-compatibility is something that can help sell consoles, but rarely gets really used. Its more psychological than anything.

And anyway, they didn't drop backward compatibility with DVD movies!

not really, at least for me. backward compatibility is oneof the most important thing I see before buying a console, beside of the version of the console (as for me, it's japanese version)

Very true!

Also, "IF" you have a 1080p TV and you see how good the games look, you kindah don't want to play your old games anymore. Its like visiting a friends house and watching their 27" CRT.

I'm a huge F1 fan and the new F1 game is the best one ever. I can't even look a the PS2 version anymore and I thought that looked good.

i beg to differ. I judge games by how enjoyable and interesting storyline. I judge movie by the appearance and storyline. Believe me, I still play Final Fantasy 1

I gave away of my PS2 and the 8 games I had as soon as I bought my PS3. For me backwards compatibility was a nice feature, but one I would never use. I also did not have a lot invested in my PS2 like many of you.

However, I recently bought my Dad a PS3 and was going to buy a 40GB, but I learned there would not be backwards compatibility and he has a few PS2 games so I wanted to make sure he could still play them.

My PS3 has never had a PS2 game in it. I agree I have no need to play old low res games on a 1080p screen.

When you purchase a PS3 your PS2 doesn't magically stop working - use it to play old games if needed.

Wouldn't the people for whom backward compatibility was important already own a PS3? And for the few that wouldn't, why woulnd't they keep their PS2 in a closet for rainy days when the mood strikes to play an oldie?

Thsi being said, correct me if I'm wrong, but can a Wii play Nintendo DS games? Imho its a good move both for taking the price down for budget conscious people and implant further the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and a game station...

Erm, no?

Why would people who want to keep playing and enjoyign their PS2 games already have a PS3?

On the later, I actually did that with my Nintendo. Course it doesn't work now. The power supply isn't stable anymore .

I dunno, Sony has been wanting to get away from the 2 SKUs thing, and this is just a return to it. Unless/until they get it to do software emulation completely.

I'm sorry folks. I love the PS3. And I love Blu-rays. But downplaying the significance of the loss of BC in the 40Gb model is just spin.

It's true that it doesn't matter to everyone. But it does matter to a lot of people. For many customers, lack of BC will make the 40Gb model a no-go.

It will harm sales of the 40Gb. Just accept it, folks.

The 40Gb will still sell anyway... probably a lot. But not as much as it would if it kept BC.

Sony has the option to develop BC for the 40Gb through software. But their recent press statements seem to say they won't bother. I believe that would be a substantial misreading of their market.
