Bitrates are a non-issue. 2D Blu-Rays have a peak rate of 40 megabits per second while 3D Blu-Ray can go up to 60. Since 3D Blu-Rays take up about 50% more information 3D Blu-Rays raise the bitrate to componstate However beyond marketing hype there is not one damn reason to separately encode a 2D version. |

I havent seen the new 3D version but the older 3D version with the paper glasses was kind of interesting because many shots had no 3D at all. I noticed this also recently when I saw Toy Story 3 in theaters... Some scenes remained 2D for whatever reason.. ...

They weren't 2D they just used the depth very minimally in order for it not to distract. Pixar has used 3D very subtilely in there movies and aren't fans of gimicky tricks

I'm all for subtle.
Too many older 3D movies just existed to show the 3D effect and constantly setup scenes just for the 3D wow factor. At times watching (the older) 3D Coraline I would take off the glasses and the movie showed no distortion which indicated the depth of the image wasn't being conveyed. -Brian |

Coraline is pretty much the standard I go to for movies that 3D makes an impact on. Several scenes look amazing, and the extending tunnel scene is the perfect example of how 3D can be used to show a sense of depth, rather than things "coming out of the screen."

![]() Whats wrong with having really deep 3D, and stuff coming out of the screen guys. I really enjoy that. I mean, I understand that for some it can be a distraction at first. But I've been to enough 3D movies now that it does not distract me from the story at all, it just adds a lot to the visual experience for me. Plus, for me it makes the movie much more fun to watch significantly more times than I normally would without the great 3D effects. Despicable Me was awesome. Both for the story, and the deep 3D effects with stuff coming out at you. But I agree that Coraline was a great 3D experience, very surreal. I loved the outdoor shots of the landscape around her house. They were very brief, but breath taking. Last edited by Lovemy3D; 07-20-2010 at 12:14 AM. |

MvA 3D does NOT contain the 2D version (see review on sites).
also the CLoudy w/Chance of Meatball 3D disc has 'shaking' issues when played back in 2D and black bars on left&right. i'm going to grab 2D versions in addition to the BD3D. |

Monsters vs Aliens does have a 2D version. It lacks compatiblity with certain 2D players due to a rushed limited release that it is. However a 2D version is on the disc and can be accessed through compatible players. All general 3D releases won't have this problem. Buying the 2D version of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, unless you must have the audio commentary, is throwing money down the crapper.

There is no separate 2D or 3D option in the menu, but all one has to do is turn off the 3D on the TV and it plays in 2D just fine. It's a simple button on the remote control. When I first started watching it, it would ask if I wanted to play in 3D or 2D. But after a while it quit asking lol. So I bet it would just automatically play in 2D on a normal TV. Quote:

In July 2009 the first Blu-Ray release of Coraline had a 3D version but it was based on the red/blue anaglyph techique. Meaning that it plays on all televisions and only requires cardboard red/blue glasses. It is encoded separately from the 2D version. Most who watched would certainly agree due the primative anaglyph technlogy the 3D effect came at heavy price when it came to color, clarity, and image stability. Detail is obsured, ghosting is frequent, and the movies gorgous color palete is completely destroyed by the limits of the anaglyph method. Im a 3D fan and I totally agree that the reference quality 2D version was without a doubt the better of the two versions on the first release. That release contained a DTS Master Audio for both versions and several great extra features. In May 2010 a new 3D version was released sold exclusively with Panasonic 3D televisions. At the present this version is not avalible for general retail. This version includes a 3D Full HD version with a 2D version extracted from the left eye of the 3D version not encoded separately (So despite the higher quality actually takes up less disc space then anaglyph 3D versions do). The 3D version this movie this version contains is by far the superior quality wise (The differences is comparible to VHS verus Blu-Ray) which delievers the 3D effect of the anaglyph version but has all the color, clarity and stability the reference 2D disc posesses. Unlike the anaglyph release this version will deliever a 3D effect only on special televisions and with expensive active shutter glasses. On any older Blu-Ray player or television it will play in 2D only. It retains the 2D/anaglyph DTS Master audio track but drops all extras from that release. Though hopefully when a 3D Full HD general retail version comes out those extras will come back. A general retail release could become avalible as soon as September but thats not confirmed. That help ![]() |
