Default verbage of hd

OK... I've noticed quite a few posts on various threads where people compare Blu-ray to HD. It's HD DVD, not HD. HD stands for High Definition and Blu-ray is an HD medium too. I'm not *****ing or whining... it's just that if newbies come on here and see things like "Bourne Ultimatum is only being released on HD"... you get the idea. This is one thing that could hurt the cause is if people thing HD DVD is High Def DVD and Blu-ray is not High Def. Sorry if this seems like a rant... it's been a LOOOoooong day.

Not a rant at all; I've noticed this as well and yeah I could see it being confusing

I've come to just calling HD DVD, 'HD' most of the time, especially if the group I'm talking with knows what I mean. HD DVD = HD, Blu-ray = BD. I don't want to waste time saying 5 frackin syllables for HD DVD.

Besides, "HD" has lost all credibility these days starting with "HD radio". People will slap it on anything.

plus, to add to this... I was in Best Buy earlier and this couple was buying an HD TV (a nice Sony 46" XBR3 I thinK) nice tv ... I was envious. Anyway, they were chatting with the sales guy about HD movies and he recommended they look into Blu-ray. The wife said that was nice, but what about HD movies. The husband (also apparently uneducated about nex-gen formats) said oh yeah, hd dvd would be high def for my hd tv right? Luckily the sales guy told them that Blu-ray was also a High Def format that was supported by more Hollywood studios and CE companies than hd dvd. I was all ready to jump in at any time, but sales guy was obviously pro Blu.

Imagine if the sales guy was an HD DVD supporter OR didn't know about the formats OR didn't care. This couple probably would have bought an hd dvd player based on the HD terminology.

I understand your point, but the lack of a few letters can leave "Average Joe" thinking HD movie player is necessary for HD tv... I'm just sayin'

Well, when some people ask me, I just put a smirk on my face and say Blu-ray is one generation above HD-DVD as HD-DVD is just a higher capacity, HD version of DVDs when Blu-ray Discs are "Beyond High Definition"

FUD is a game for two
