Talking Hanna Review Thread (Use Spoiler Tags)

This sounds interesting, Bana can be a real bad ass, "Chopper" anybody? And Saoirse was fantastic as the innocent young Susie Salmon in "the Lovely Bones," so the idea of such a sweet looking girl as an assassin? BTW, for those of you wondering how to pronounce her name Saoirse it rhymes with Inertia, and it's Irish. Anyways, this definitely makes me think of Leon, just like the article says, and Saoirse has worked with director Joe Wright on her oscar nominated performance at 13 years old, in Atonement.

Former comic Eric Bana, fresh from his applauded performance in Judd Apatow laffer ''Funny People'', is returning to action – the genre that earned him a spot on the Hollywood Star Map.

Bana will join “Lovely Bones” star Saoirse Ronan for “Hannah”, a Joe Wright-directed actioner about a teenage assassin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Bana will play Ronan’s father in the story of a 14-year-old Eastern European girl saved from a CIA breeding camp and raised by her dad to be a cold-blooded killing machine. After finding peace with a French family, the girl is dragged back to her father’s world, and she must fight her way to a free life.”.

Sounds like Seth Lochhead and David Farr’s script is less “Wanted” and more “Leon”, which can only be a good thing. Source

Cate Blanchett is signing on to join the Joe Wright-directed assassin drama "Hanna" for Focus Features says Deadline Hollywood.

Saoirse Ronan plays a 14-year-old girl who has grown up entirely in a remote woods where her father has taught her to become a lethal assassin.

She soon leaves the woods for the first time and sets out on a job to kill a high-ranking government official with many secrets.

Eric Bana also stars and shooting kicks off in Germany in March. Source

Her character is Eastern European... does that mean she'll have her natural Irish accent? That would be neat if she did.

Sounds like a fun movie.

Saoirse Ronan is an amazing young actress. Did not see the Lovely Bones, but she stole the movie in Atonement (another Joe Wright directed movie). I am a fan of Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Soloist) and let's hope he uses Dario Marinelli for the music again (which he won an Oscar for best original score for Atonement).

Why would she have an Irish accent if she's playing an Eastern European? Last time I looked outside my door, Ireland was nowhere near any Eastern European countries

Actually it would be Sir Sha. You can YouTube a video of her interview on George Lopez where they ask about how to pronounce it, and that was actually her that said it rhymes with inertia, lol. I'm not that clever, I looked up her interviews to find out how the hell to pronounce her name myself, cause I've never seen such a name. It's awesome, and I love her irish accent, she is a great actress at such a young age, I cannot wait to see what she brings to this role.

That's why I put a question mark. I can't see Ireland when I look outside my door.

I like her but because I read the book and it was so much different I didn't like the movie that much.

It definitely is. Her acting was good though, pretty much all the acting was. It's just how they handled the story.

Joe Wright (Atonement) is gathering quite a cast for his upcoming film and seems to be acquiring quite a few high-profile additions right before shooting begins on Hanna. The assassin tale already nabbed Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, with Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett joining in the last two months. But he hasn’t stopped there, as we were given a press release detailing that the co-star of the Oscar nominated Un Prophete, Niels Arestrup, is joining Wright’s film as well. Considering the film is set to shoot next week, more casting news will be released shortly as there are a few more key roles to fill. Personally, this will definitely be a film to keep an eye on with an intriguing plot of a 14-year-old assassin (Ronan), a fully competent director at the helm, and a great cast.

For more on Hanna, including the full synopsis, filming locations, and the entire press release.

Quote:
Here’s the press release:

The adventure thriller Hanna, directed by BAFTA Award winner Joe Wright, begins filming in Europe next week. Focus Features holds worldwide rights to the movie. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (of Focus’ Atonement, also directed by Mr. Wright), Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (soon to be seen in Robin Hood), and Eric Bana (Star Trek) star in Hanna. Joining the cast is Niels Arestrup, who last month won the César Award (France’s Academy Award equivalent) for Best Supporting Actor for A Prophet [Un Prophčte].

Hanna (to be played by Ms. Ronan) is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her father (Mr. Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Sweden. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Ms. Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

Seth Lochhead wrote the initial screenplay and has written subsequent drafts, as have David Farr, Joe Penhall, and Mr. Wright. Academy Award nominee Leslie Holleran (Chocolat) is producing Hanna with the team of Marty Adelstein and Scott Nemes (who are in post-production on The Experiment). Barbara A. Hall, who executive-produced Focus’ Academy Award-winning Milk, encores in that capacity on Hanna. Focus senior vice president, European production Teresa Moneo is supervising Hanna for president of production John Lyons. European locations for Hanna’s filming will include Finland, Bavaria, Morocco, and Berlin (the latter in part at Studio Babelsberg).

Alwin Küchler, who shot the upcoming Morning Glory, is the director of photography, and Lucie Bates (Go for Zucker!) is the costume designer. Mr. Wright is reunited on Hanna with several longtime collaborators, including film editor Paul Tothill (Focus’ Pride & Prejudice) and the thrice-Academy Award-nominated team of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer.

Mr. Schamus said, “We’re so pleased to reunite with Saoirse and Joe for Hanna - Focus’ biggest production yet. With Saoirse taking on such a demanding role opposite Cate and Eric, this movie will be not only breathlessly exciting but also emotionally affecting.”

A few new pictures have hit the web today. I guess it is pretty much confirmed now that Hanna no longer has the 'h' at the end as it originally did. To see all the other photos, click the top picture of Cate Blanchett.

The first image of Saoirse Ronan in Hanna has come online. The thriller re-teams Ronan with her Atonement director Joe Wright. The film has her playing the title character, a perfect assassin trained by her ex-CIA agent father (Eric Bana) in rural Finland. You can’t really blame him. What else is there to do in rural Finland but raise your daughter to be a killing machine?

Last week, we saw the first set images from the film featuring Bana and Cate Blanchett who plays an “icy intelligence operative” overseeing Hanna’s mission. Hanna is due out next year.

Here’s the synopsis of the film, although it says the character’s from Sweden, not Finland. Whatever. It’s a cold place in Europe.*

Hanna is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her father, an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Sweden. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own. As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

*And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you offend all your Swedish and Finnish readers in a few sentences.
