Default Region A includes Japan, Korea and Hong Kong?!

Ok, obviously I found the answer before posting this... but I didn't know this till like 5 minutes ago. I just want to confirm with you guys that Blus (marked Region A) from Japan, Korea and Hong Kong should play perfectly fine in my blu-ray player? Seriously this is blowing my mind. I just recently hit over 540 BDs and was telling myself I'm going to slow down on the buying... and now that I just realized this the possibilities of BDs to import is boggling my mind... I'm not sure if I'll be able to go the entire weekend without ordering something.

if your Blu-ray player is configured to play region A discs the answer is yes and this hasn't changed since 2006. side note: some studios release several titles of their library region-free on Blu-ray.

Yes, they'll play just fine on your region A player ... now you have five years worth of catching up to do.

Here's the blu-ray region code map:

it's true, but most Japanese bds don't have English subs. Like there are 100's of anime releases but most do not have English subs.
there are certainly some good bds from those countries, though, like the Japanese "Equilibrium".
There are some excellent HK discs that are more likely to have English subs, as they speak English in HK.

guess you'll have to call 911 when you find out you can actually buy players that will play region B discs for under $100.

Nope, I never bothered even checking. I mistakenly just figured the regions were the same as DVDs.

I knew about buying another BD player, but didn't know they were under $100. Now you don't mean they can play Region A and B right? Just Region B? That's why I never figured I'd buy one.

Another question for anyone who imports from Asia... are the menus easy to figure out? I'm guessing Blus from Hon Kong might have the option for English menus, but I'm mostly wondering about Korea and Japan.

You can also purchase players that have been modded to be region free. With some, like the Oppo players, you can install the kit yourself.

You can switch between all 3 regions. Here is one I guess you can get in Canada.

I have a few japanese dvd's. The basic menu layout doesn't change. You should be able to recognize whether your in setup or especially in scene selection obviously. Navigation shouldn't take very long to figure out.

Menu in Hong Kong is English. Most Japan also but I can't said 100%.

Not only Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, you can get nearly all Asian He as it is under region A.

China is region C but all released BD is region free.

Most big studio like Universal is releasing region Free disc everywhere in the wHappy purchasing. :d

I just can't justify spending $30 for My Super Ex-Girlfriend (Japan) when it will likely be in the $7.99 bin at Best Buy if it ever comes out in the USA...
