Australia The Game (David Fincher)

I really like The Game a lot. But I'm scared to buy this on BD as the HD DVD was of so poor quality.

Any info yet of the Australian/German/all other BD releases of The Game?

Fetch DVD also have it for $9.95. I ordered from EzyDVD, but there are some great titles in Fetch DVD's sale that EzyDVD don't have.

Yes, that's where I ordered it from.

Actually reading more of the former HD DVD reviews from other forums members, I think it could just pretty much be the case that The Game was intentionally shot to look a little poor, atleast in some shots of the film. It might never look excellent. I just hope that Universal ain't screwing the transfer with more DNR than the HD DVD had.

I should have it tomorrow so will check it out fully. Hopefully the transfer's OK, but if it's not the best I'll still be happy for the price as my DVD was stolen and this would want to look better than that.

So how is the PQ?

I am not expecting much at all, for such a cheap price on release...

I totally agree with you. Audio and picture quality are far more important to me than any extra features.

OK, I've sampled a number of scenes. I will watch the full film and give a better opinion later but here's what I get from what I've seen:

The BD uses an old master. While it's not terrible it does clearly have the look of an old master with some flecks and dust as well as some telecine wobble, mainly noticeable in the titles.

DNR and EE have been used but I think in this case it's not major. The film was shot and processed to give it a softer look so telling where the intended look stops and the DNR kicks in is quite hard, specifically when it's and older master. The EE is from what I could see quite light on but it is there. It is mainly noticeable when a high contrast image is present (bright sky against a dark building for instance).

The disc is film only, no special features at all.

My overall thoughts are these:

Could it be better: absolutely. Is it a travesty considering it's finally a release of The Game in 1080p for $10: No, definitely not. The disc mainly suffers from an older master with some DNR and what I suppose you would term as minor EE. In motion the EE is not particularly noticeable and the main detractor is the inherent softness which you can definitely put down to 1 part intended look, 1 part old master and 1 part DNR. I'm guessing the master that was struck for either the original DVD release or the special edition DVD was used.

Sound-wise it has it's moments. It's fine in terms of clarity and in the few moments of action sounds quite good. Dialogue seems reasonably well reproduced and the score sounds great. It's not a wildly dynamic mix but the surrounds and sub kick in when needed.

In the end though it was $10 and I finally have The Game. I can't do anything but recommend it at that price point especially when the crappy non-anamorphic original DVD still costs about the same. It may not have special features but as many have noted above the film is what counts. Ultimately it all depends what you're after - the (currently) best home representation of the actual film for $10 or less, or more special features on a DVD. For $10 I'm not going to complain as in this case I think the price at release is more than reasonable and equals out the deficiencies of the transfer.

Just out of curiousity-regardless of what it did to the poor cat-why all the red 'the's' in your post?Apreciate your post regarding the game's PQ quality though.Already ordered it,so will hopefully have it this week

PS:Strange. Now they're gone on my screen. . . .Anyone else noticing that strange phenomenon?

Have now received my copy of The Game on BD-german edition. It has high bit-rate,the sound is marvelous, but the picture-while good-could have been sharper I feel.Haven't seen the movie in the theaters,so have no comparison than a rather bad DVD transfer to compare against.

PQ:3/5-may upgrade it in the future since I've only sampled a few scenes, but sampled several scenes-so am pretty confident in my mark.

AQ:5/5-on my system.

PS:Have thought about it abit more, and viewed it whole.Have doiwngraded PQ.It's not bad,but could have been good deal better.

I really like this movie and would love to own it. Does anyone know if either the Australian or German versions of this Blu-ray are region free? I suspect this movie is very far down on the Universal to-do list in the usa.
