DRAFTHOUSE FILMS ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO “COMIN’ AT YA! 3D” FROM FANTASTIC FEST 2011
The Highest Grossing Independent 3D Film Of The 1980s Becomes First Fully Restored Classic 3D Film Using State-Of-The-Art RealD Technology AUSTIN, TX – Thursday, September 29, 2011 – Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced the acquisition of North American rights to COMIN AT YA! 3D following the premiere of its stunning new restoration at Fantastic Fest 2011. In 1981, armed with exclusively developed, cutting-edge 3D technology co-writer/producer/star Tony Anthony enlisted Italian genre veteran Fernando Baldi to realize the first-ever 3D spaghetti western – a grindhouse-fueled tale of a vengeful gunslinger. Breaking indie box office records, COMIN’ AT YA! 3D is credited with igniting a resurgence of studio-produced 3D films. Thirty years later, Anthony and producer Tom Stern of STERNCO 3D have broken new frontiers again with the first fully restored classic 3D film in high-definition, utilizing contemporary state-of-art RealDä3D technology. A limited theatrical re-release tour is planned for 2012. “We felt that Drafthouse Films, with their young and aggressive leadership, combined with a new model for 3D distribution, gave us the best chance to reach both longtime fans of the film and new audiences,” says Tony Anthony. “In a barrage of flying arrows, snakes and old-school 3D thrills COMIN’ AT YA! certainly delivers,” Drafthouse Films director Evan Husney says, “and matching quintessential 80s-style 3D with cutting-edge contemporary technology is going to make for the ultimate 3D experience for movie-goers.” For more information on Drafthouse Films or COMIN’ AT YA 3D visit: http://www.cominatyanoir3d.com http://twitter.com/drafthousefilms http://facebook.com/drafthousefilms http://youtube.com/drafthousefilms |

![]() (Although the company announcement feels more like a William Lustig/Blue Underground-style "inside job", just so Tony Anthony can get his Italian 3-D movies on disk...But if that means "Treasures of the Four Crowns" on B3D, that'll make a lot of fans happy, and it's a good start for other vintage projects, 80's-3D or not.) On a side note, did anyone listen to the commentary on the "Alamo Drafthouse edition" of Synapse's "42nd St. Forever, Vol. 5" DVD? Great stories, including the time [Show spoiler]

He already posted clips of his own restorations of F13, Jaws3D, Parasite, Wax, Kiss Me Kate, The French Line ("Jane Russell...She'll knock both your eyes out!"), Mad Magician, the Japanese LD of Dial M for Murder, and of course, Starchaser: the Legend of Orin. ![]() (http://www.youtube.com/user/underground3dmovies#p/u , for those with SBS->3D conversion screens who can get YouTube on their PS3's) Sadly, the business never happened, but it does push the issue: 50's 3D was sunk by obscure filler and television, 80's 3D was sunk by the rise of corporate cineplex projection and the bottom-feeding crappiness of its indie movies, but we have the technology today--Why NOT preserve them as they were shown, unless we feel they're somehow "unworthy" as movies? If 80% of 3D-hate is about present-day movies and theater ticket-gouging, might as well do what home-theater does, and look to the past. Warner already announced plans to catalog-experiment for the 3D film-buff niche with HoWax and DialM, and I'd rather watch those on B3D than the Green Lantern movie. Most of the Actives also convert Side-by-Side into True3D, like my humble but reliable Panasonic Viera.
Just check your 2D->3D conversion settings menu, and there should be an option for SBS and Top&Bottom...Then, if you can access YouTube on the bigscreen, convert a few of U3D's clips, and know why I'm all behind the Classics. ![]() |
