Energy Star "ratings" are BS to begin with, as they are simply numbers some group who think they are experts feel they should impose on companies and consumers. If I want to own a top piece of technology that happens to be at the top because it does NOT comply with these ratings, and I choose to pay the cost to power it, then that should be my choice and no one else's. Besides, if you look at the overall annual operational costs, the differences are inconsequential.

Having a rating system is fine for those that feel compelled to buy based upon it, but when when manufacturers are required to build within these arbitrary numbers, and performance/features/innovation suffer because of it, then I take issue. Don't even get me started on some of the state idiots that have attempted and are attempting to "ban" any such piece of equipment that may not comply with some of these ridiculous standards.

agree with the first part but not the second. The numbers might be semi-arbitrary but they are based on what is available and what can be done. I consider them BS because there are always ways of faking it. Energystar/guide is based on the most energy efficient use. So what happens, the dishwasher I bought a few years ago has a very useless economy wash cycle and so I always use Normal (but the economy cycle lowers the electricity needed). The fridge I bought has an "energy saver" button, the manual recommends not to use since it is bad for the fridge, so why would anyone use it?it is there because it helps with the energy star rating. TVs were built on the old system, I am sure soon enough they will all find a way (even if no one will use that setting) to qualify for energy star rating.

It is kind of like salary caps in the NHL (don't know if it is as bad in other sports). Because a players salary does not count once he has retired (not playing in the NHL, teams/players negotiate long, sometimes ridiculously so, contracts so that the player makes less each year and the teams takes a smaller hit on the cap while he is playing but the player still makes as much.
