PS3 just died. Help with restore

So my PS3 just died. The funny thing is that it was the wife who pnicked and said we needed a new one right away (we cancelled cable and just use streaming via PS3)

My concern is how to get my data back from the old one. I don't have too much: WipeOut, a Zombie game, a couple of PSP games that I was planning on transferring to the PS Vita eventually and, of course, game saves.

The problem is I can't do a back up now that it's not working.

Can I just put the old hard drive in an enclosure, connect it to the new machine by USB and tell it to restore?
