Criterion The Hero (1966)

Quote:
In this psychologically rich character study, written and directed by Satyajit Ray, Bengali film star Uttam Kumar draws on his real-world celebrity to play Arindam Mukherjee, a matinee idol on the brink of his first flop. When Mukherjee boards an overnight train to Delhi to accept an award, a journalist (Sharmila Tagore) approaches him seeking an exclusive interview, which initiates a conversation that sends the actor reeling down a path of self-examination. Seamlessly integrating rueful flashbacks and surreal dream sequences with the quietly revelatory stories of the train’s other passengers, The Hero is a graceful meditation on art, fame, and regret from one of world cinema’s most keenly perceptive filmmakers.

Disc Features

Dope

The original title is "Nayak: The Hero." I hope they change it back to that.

Is this a Film Foundation restoration? Either way, glad to see more Ray coming.

Never heard of this film.

But the Apu Trilogy, The Music Room and The Big City are all among my absolute favorite films in the Criterion Collection.

...so I will getting this one ASAP.

I could not wait for this till next B&N sale, ordered from bn.com on the release week. Watched it today and it is another masterwork.

I watched it before about 15-20 years back and I found it much better than I remembered.

The acting of the title character (Uttam Kumar) requires special mention, in the booklet Ray mentioned he could find flaws in his own direction, but none in his acting. I agree with him.

This is one of Ray's lesser works IMO, falling prey to some heavy-handed symbolism and preachiness. Uttam Kumar does do a good job, and his own mainstream celebrity status made him the apt actor for the part.

Gorgeous transfer, they really put a lot of work into this one. Loved the movie as well, much more accessible than the Apu Trilogy and Jalsaghar. Maybe not quite as good as the former but I liked it more than the latter, and certainly works as more of an entertainment than any of those do. Uttam Kumar's performance is a thing of beauty. Loved every minute of this.

Symbolism does feature. Preachiness, am not sure. As always a movie experience is subjective but for me personally, this is certainly top tier Ray that needs more exposure. The intellectualism of Ray's films shines big time in this complemented by a fantastic turn not just by Uttam Kumar but everyone in the cast, including Sharmila Tagore.

Question: How does the PQ compare to the Artificial Eye Region B release ? Planning to purchase this and 'Devi' in the current B&N 50% off sale. TIA

They were based on the same master so differences should be negligible, but the AE disc is barebones.
