That's great news for Blu-ray and PS3 fans! Sony has needed something at this price point since launch.

I like a $399 ps3 that will help sells for sure.

I don't think it's wise to market this as the "affordable" blu player.

Why can't sony put the ps3 guts into a real box? I hate the look of the ps3, it just looks like a game system.

I think if the ps3 looked more neutral and not so much of a game system it would help people to buy as a player.

what, like the PS2? that design was gross IMHO... it looked like a toy with all those little grills and stuff. i guess some would prefer toy over george foreman grill... the whole black and gradient blue wasn't workin' for me... all the gen 6 console designs sucked... this time around at least they are appealing somewhat. save the dell-rehash xbox.

I don't know, I think the PS3 looks pretty sharp this time around, obviously there are few little details that could be roughed out, but much better looking than the PS2 was.

Who cares! Whatever it looks like, it will be putting Blu-ray in the hands of many more people this holiday season!! That's another stab to the heart of the HD-DUD camp

good news!. although I would prefer to buy a 60GB/80GB PS3, with full USB port, not reduced like 40GB, as I use lots of peripherals

i highly doubt the usb ports would be completely gone, how would you charge the controller?

well, somebody posted here that the USB port might be gone. I doubt this. Same reason/question as you. How do you charge the controller?

I saw something about the new model number with the FCC having 2 USB ports. I doubt they would get rid of all of them for the reason mentioned (charging the controller) and because you have to connect the controller to upgrade the firmware (at least so far). I'm not sure if that model number with the FCC and on the new movie rebate form is the rumored 40GB one, but it looks fairly likely.

The new firmware versions do not need the controller plugged in.

Thanks. I wondered if they might change that requirement, but didn't realize they had.

I'm in class right now...but I work at best buy...I'm going there after class to pick up FF and Day after tomorrow....I'll be sure to look this up in our system and tell you if its photoshopped or not...does look like our systems pages...tho it would be a simple edit to make it look like it was a 40gig PS3....I'll be back in a few hours with an update....*crosses fingers*...hopefully it is factual....lol

But the ps3 is a gaming machine first and BD player second, from now until forever.

You still need a game controller however. You can't do it with just the "movie" remote control, which is very unfortunate.

Worst suggestion ever..

IT IS A GAME CONSOLE!!!! WOW ISNT THAT SURPRISING?!?!?!

Seriously, they're targeting gamers with this, with the intention that they will (atleast eventually) become bluray movie buyers. The process worked perfectly with me:

Bought the PS3 first, then my HDTV, then I got into bluray! Sure there are people that own the HDTV first, but for those that dont the PS3 gives them an extra incentive to upgrade to one. The PS3, because it IS A GAMING CONSOLE, can be marketed to SDTV AND HDTV owners.

Ive started to see adds showing the PS3 as a gaming and blu-ray playing machine. This form of add is far more important than your suggested "face lift". Why? For the same reason I stated, let gamers know their system plays blurays as well instead of trying to appeal directly to those that want a standalone. A $400 40gig, if true, is a way bigger deal than a garbage-brand 200$ hddvd player.
