Default PirateBay.org Sues Movie Industries? wha?

I thought this was kinda weird. I mean it's an Illegal Torrent website filed charges against multiple movie companies.

Basically.. PB files charges against media companies

Thanks to the email-leakage from MediaDefender-Defenders we now have proof of the things we've been suspecting for a long time; the big record and movie labels are paying professional hackers, saboteurs and ddosers to destroy our trackers.

While browsing through the email we identified the companies that are also active in Sweden and we have tonight reported these incidents to the police. The charges are infrastructural sabotage, denial of service attacks, hacking and spamming, all of these on a commercial level.

The companies that are being reported are the following:

* Twentieth Century Fox, Sweden AB
* Emi Music Sweden AB
* Universal Music Group Sweden AB
* Universal Pictures Nordic AB
* Paramount Home Entertainment (Sweden) AB
* Atari Nordic AB
* Activision Nordic Filial Till Activision (Uk) Ltd
* Ubisoft Sweden AB
* Sony Bmg Music Entertainment (Sweden) AB
* Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Nordic AB

NOTE* If this was already posted, Sorry. I just thought it was kinda weird.

I live near Chicago, it's not like any of their police force ever gets sued. Even people trying to enforce laws have to follow them themselves. And pirate bay isn't breaking any Swedish laws for them to be shut down, that's why they're still up.

In other words, Pirate Bay is a *legal* bittorrent site. Ironically even if they were illegal, what was allegedly done against them are much more serious crimes...

It's just that these things don't happen to be illegal yet in Sweden

It's a pre-emptive strike to the movie companies paying enough money to shut the place down through legislation

I think it would mean changing the constitution of the country, wouldn't it? I'm pretty sure the media giants took it all the way to their version of the supreme court. Sweeden is one of the last safe havens for freedom on the planet. The US is bought and paid for each election.

Steamboat Willy still under copyright law. That Sonny Bono legislation really irks me to no end.

Not so much a pre-emptive strike, as a return one. They've been raided a couple of times already.

That said, I do hope they win, if only because what's happening here is companies using illegal methods to hurt not only them, but also internet infrastructure that normal users use. They're saturating routers, slowing down/interrupting internet traffic, and also increasing ISP costs which then filters down to the users. Two wrongs don't make a right, and definitely not in a case like this.

Yeah. One company paying people to sabotage another? That is serious crime in most countries. Just depends how well they can prove it would be my guess.

It's illegal for people here. It's not illegal in their home country.

No offense, but as much as it may seem unfair, it's not up the the US, or it's corporate entities to police the world.

its really hard to feel sorry for a torrent site, plus remember these are just allegations made by shady people in the first place, I wouldnt take their word for it without more proof

Give me a fricken break pal. How would you feel if your hard work was being stolen and distributed for profit by scum sucking sleaze bags? Do you enjoy getting paid for your hard work?

I'm quite frankly sick of people using legal loopholes to get away with immoral/unethical behavior.

This is not about censorship but rather companies/artists trying to protect their intellectual property and livelihood. Artists might not get much from every sale but those sales help to ensure signing bonuses in the future.

While it might be true that some torrent content is perfectly legal, sites with a name of Pirate Bay exist solely to pirate software/movies and music. They brag about their exploits.

The point isnt about piratebay getting paid, its about copyright holders NOT getting paid.

Click HERE to see Michael Moore's take on YouTube.

IMO I completely agree with him. Works of true quality will be rewarded more by the more people who see them. Share away, as long as your not trying to profit off it!

The reason why it's not illegal in Sweden is because they don't carry any of the movies, music, books, etc. The purpose of a torrent is to bring you to the uploaders/seeders. So it's difficult to hold the torrent sites accountable because all they do is provide the torrents, not the actual movies, music, books, etc. So, no copyright laws are being violated despite what they say. It is illegal to download and upload a copyrighted property without authorization. But it's not illegal to download and upload a torrent because it's not the actual copyrighted property. It's basically a hyperlink to the uploaders/seeders.

The allegations PirateBay.org are making are very serious too. People can go to jail for attacking websites.

I don't condone piracy, I'm just saying why torrents aren't really illegal.

Sweden has still signed the Berne Convention. They are required to respect international copyrights

http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ38a.pdf

I'm sorry, but peopel have the right to protect their copyrights, rather than people file sharing it willy nilly for free. As much as I respect Mr. Moore, he does not hold the copyright, nor did he front the money for his movies

Making a fortune in ads isn't illegal. At no time did they profit from the actual torrents.

this is like saying CNN.com makes money from terrorism because they happen to carry stories about terrorists, while making money from their ad revenue.
