USA We are the Best! (Lukas Moodysson) - September 23, 2014

We Are the Best! Blu-ray

Quote:
From Swedish master Lukas Moodysson, We are the Best! revolves around three girls in 1980's Stockholm who decide to form a punk band -- despite not having any instruments and being told by everyone that punk is dead. Based on a graphic novel, We are the Best! is a paean to DIY culture and the power of rebellion.

Great film! I hope we get some of his earlier films on BD as well eventually. His masterpiece Lilja 4-Ever has never been released in the US on home video in any format, except (so I'm told by a friend) as a Netflix exclusive rental-only DVD briefly years ago. Mammoth is available in a handful of overseas markets, but none of his previous films are available on BD anywhere in the world.

Lovely film. It's available on iTunes, for those that are interested.

Lilja 4-Ever....wow. And the award for "the most depressing movie of the all time" goes to...Good and powerful film, tho very bleak and unrelenting. Replay value: none.

Aww... I can see how some might feel that way, but personally I never find nominally "unhappy" films depressing if they're brilliantly crafted. I've seen this and United 93 multiple times, and am always trying to get friends to watch them, when I gladly watch them again. Watching that level of cinematic artistry devoted to telling a story that powerful never depresses me And Moodysson said that he made Lilja 4-Ever because he's a staunch Christian, and that his faith allowed him to not find the material depressing, because of the greater possibilities for the character beyond what she suffers in the film. While I'm not Christian, I find that hope throughout the film, but I guess I just tend to see things that way
