Default Question about blu ray ps3 games and scratches

heya

ive noticed that on a few of my ps3 games i have scratches that can be seen at certain angles under light, seeing as games are not like movies where u can just watch them and see if they still work is there anyway of knowing if the scratch will affect the disk without having to replay the game which could take 10+ hours....

i first noticed a scratch on modern warfare 2 and them some on devil may cry 4 and oblivion...they dont look like deep scratches as you cant see them without getting the disc at the right angle, does the protective layer on blu rays also help the disc data stay intact or only help prevent stratches in the first place

thank you for any infomation.

BD's hard-coating is there to prevent scratches only. A deep enough scratch, that penetrates the coating, can ruin a BD.

As for light scratches, the same rules as dvd and cd apply: it should be OK if it goes against-the-grain, so to speak. The laser reads the disc as it spins, so a scratch that is in the direction of spin (one that likely occurs while the disc is spinning or due to dirt in the transport) is going to be harder for the player's error correction to work with. If the scratch travels from the center rim to the outer edge, it shouldn't cause problems, unless it's too deep.

That said, a lot of marks that look like scratches, aren't, and will actually wipe away. I would recommend getting a microfiber cloth for cleaning your discs, like those used for cleaning camera and eyeglass lenses. They're the best way I've found for cleaning a disc. As long as the microfiber cloth is clean, it won't even scratch standard dvds too easily; with BDs you can really bear down to remove even more stubborn stuff that normally requires the aid of a cleaning compound, and the cloth won't leave a mark.

Thanks for the info, most of the scratches go across the disc so thats one good thing, do most games use enough space to use the whole blu ray? Like the kinda scratch I have on my mw2 disc is a 1cm almost in the shape of a circle which is towards the outer part of the disc
