Have I been missing everything, or has Graffeo been pretty quiet since the HD DVD panel at EMA?

well i cant speak for the masses but to use myself as an example, I am a gamer through and through, I got all the next gen consoles and when I purchased my ps3 I got it for the sole purpose of playing games but because I was so excited over the ps3 I bought goodfellows as an impulse buy just to see what all the talk was about regarding the blu ray format. Now looking at my collection I own 6 PS3 games (lots more to come) and 61 Blu Ray movies. Not bad for a "gamer" eh?

One thing I find somewhat incredible is people on the HD DVD side using this claim that 60% of PS3 owners don't know that it players Blu-ray movies as if it is a positive for HD DVD and a negative for Blu-ray. Given a fixed number of discs sold and a fixed number of PS3s sold up until this point, the Blu-ray side should be much happier if that occurred with a low percentage of PS3s owners realizing the capability of their PS3, than if a super high percentage knew about it and the numbers still ended up where they did. There is more chance of turning a person toward using a product a certain way if they don't know about it and you educate them, than if they know about it already and chose not to use it that way. A lack of knowledge about the playback capability amongst owners would mean that the Blu-ray camp has many people who already own a player and don't realize it. Once they are educated, their cost of getting in would just be the discs. As opposed to the HD DVD side where the cost of XBOX360 owners getting in includes buying the add-on.

And that same kind of thing goes for the HD DVD side. If it turned out that only 5% of XBOX360 owners knew about the add-on and 2% bought it, smart people on the HD DVD side would consider that a positive compared to if 95% knew about it and only 2% bought it.

This just seems like basic common sense to me. Would one sports team trash talk another by saying, "You're beating us by 20 points, but 60% of your players haven't shown up" as if that was a positive thing for the team behind?

Also, this argument that only a small percentage of XBOX360 owners bought the add-on and so therefore only a small percentage of gamers care about high definition seems a little bit like saying that sales for the Zune are low, therefore the public doesn't care about portable music. When the truth is much of the public does care about portable music, but just prefer the iPod to the Zune. The XBOX360's approach with the add-on as a separate device that can't do more than 2 channel lossless audio isn't quite the same as the nice integrated solution Sony has with the PS3 and is likely part of the cause for their very low percentage. I'm not saying we'll ever see a majority of PS3 owners use it for Blu-ray movie playback, but the percentage of XBOX360 owners that spend the extra money for a device that sits separate from their XBOX360 and connects to it with another cable, while using another power cord, isn't going to tell us how many PS3 owners will use it for BDs. I thought it was rather amusing on AVS when one of HD DVD's loudest supporters at the time (nfinity) asked Amir if he could put his HD DVD drive inside the XBOX360 since he hated having the two piece solution. There are a lot of arguments about choice being given or not, but the XBOX360 doesn't offer the choice of one integrated solution with an HD format drive.

From the article:

"He also said that Microsoft's own research had concluded that console owners play a game for an average of 400 hours, but only spend three hours a month watching movies."

What is he trying to say here? That a gamer plays a total of 400 hours per month (that would be 13.3 hours per day), 400 hours per game (highly unlikely, even for a sports title), or 400 hours for the life of the console (not likely, too low). And they are saying gamers watch, what two 1.5 hour movies per month? I doubt it. I would wager most watched more. Sounds like more FUD to me. Pulling numbers out of thin air.

I have to agree with some here - who pays 500 bux for a gaming console and NOT KNOW what it does?

Lol, pure BS if you ask me.

That site is horrible, I couldn't even read half way without 2 popups and the screen changing to an advertisement I couldn't get rid of.

I am also a PS3 user who buys/rents plenty of Blu-rays. Coincidently, the only game I own is Resistance and the only game I rented is Heavenly Sword. I bought the PS3 because it was the best Blu-ray player under 1k. All of my friends that want Blu-ray will also be getting PS3s. In reality the only person who would not get the PS3 for a Blu-ray player is somone who simply doesnt like the idea of owning a game console. In reality it is two things in one, even though I dont play games much I find myself enjoying the feature sometimes. The DVR capability, when it comes out, will definitely make the PS3 the best Blu-ray player to buy.

I dont think anyone, including Sony, expected most PS3 owners to be watching Blu-rays. 40% of PS3 users is still a big boost for Blu-ray sales, and the PS3 offers a quality "entry level" player at a great price.

How will the DVR capability even work? There is not "in" connection on the PS3 to allow it. I guess I am confused?

Since the PS3 is WiFi and Bluetooth capable, I suppose that is a way to record the TV, but I am not a tech guy so I dont know if that would work. They do have it in Europe so it would work like Europe's does. And for those of you not as lazy as I, you can have 3 extra credit points if you look up the answer for the class.

Strictly from a personal point of view, I bought the PS3 to watch movies AND play games. I think I'd buy about maybe 8-12 games a year on average(include downloading from the PSN), and I'd buy maybe two to three times that number in movies per year (if you count individual movies in boxsets that is )... so 20+ movies a year.

What's next, blu-ray owners don't watch tv? Or maybe PS3 owners never listen to music?

I bought my PS3 to play games and movies. It was a lot cheaper than a 360 plus addon or standalone. Plus I didn't want to deal with any possible 360 returns. Plus Blu-Ray has alot better movies and alot better potential IMO . I watch more movies on it (Blu-ray and DVD's) than I play games.

honestly i didnt even give a shit about the blu-ray player when i bought my
ps3. i just wanted to play the games. I knew it was a blu-ray player but didnt care. im not much of a movie watcher, but being able to see movies in blu is excellent, it encourages me to watch movies more often. so far ive only bought 2 blu movies, but thats subject to change...

yeah those analyst or w/e the hell are dumb, ps3 owners obviously know its a blu-ray player and do use it, but then again all people who own ps3s dont own hdtvs... but then there are people who bought ps3s just to use em as blu players... so yeah

ps3 games + blu-ray movies = great!!

i brought my ps3 for games but now days i would rather pay the aussie tag of $40 for a movie that i will watch over and over again then paying $100+ for a game im only going to place , and maybe finish.

combined with the fact that pretty much every game to come out here gets delayed months after the 360 gets it release i only use my ps3 for movies lately.
