Default Projector display question

Hi. I have a Sharp projector that does 720p and 1080i. I believe the native resolution is 720 and that the 1080i is displayed "in Intelligent Compression." When I watch a blu ray using my PS3 and an HDMI cable and set it to 1080i, my projector says 540p as the display. The PS3 says it's displaying 1080i. When I set it to display 720p, the projector and PS3 both say they're displaying 720p. Now, when I connect component cables to the projector, and set it to 1080i, the projector says it's displaying 1080i this time.

My question is, why does my projector say 540p when I connect it with HDMI and use 1080i, and is this particular display significantly better/worse than the 720p I can choose instead. Because I can't tell much of a difference. My projector is a Sharp DT-400 if anyone is interested.

Thanks.

I found this in your DT-400's operation manual.

Note
• 540P is displayed on the screen when signal
1080I is inputted during DVI connection
I guess you're using a dvi to hdmi connector, right?

Yes, the projector has a DVI input, not HDMI, forgot about that.

So is that not 1080i?

check out the resolution pattern on a Sony BD (press 7669 when on the disc menu) and see which setting gives better vertical/horizontal resolution. Also watch 24p material (movies) and 60i material (like concerts or most documentaries) in both ways to see if theres a difference in quality between your display's deinterlacer and the PS3's

Yes it is, but I guess Sharp decided to display it on screen as 540p because you're using a dvi connector. Don't ask me why. I don't know.

Anyway, I think you want to watch Blu-ray's this way. It'll look better than 720p. On the other hand, when you're playing PS3 games, try it in 720p mode. That resolution is better suited for playing games (because of the fast moving images).

This is just the way your display handles a 1080i signal coming in from the DVI connector.

1080i, or 1080 lines interlaced is essentially 540 lines progressive, Interlacing divides the 1080 lines into 2 fields of 540 lines each.
