Default PC Sales Declining?

Just stumbled across this article today.

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/rea...ry?id=18935781

Shockingly enough, PC sales are declining. Not sure why. Nobody uses computers anymore? I'm pretty shocked to hear because I thought we're living in an electronic world now. Weird.

Ok, those are good for traveling. But when you're at home, isn't it better to use a desktop?

Nope. You can surf on your tablet and watch tv. My wife uses our desktop to pay the bills, but that's all the use it gets now. I won't be upgrading it anytime soon, if ever. Portability is king now. I have customers that use their cell phones to transfer bank funds while standing at my counter to pay.

I don't know. I like desktops. Nice big screen and they're much faster. In fact, they're so fast that I never really needed to upgrade my 4 year old desktop. It's still lightning fast after all these years.

And not to mention that it's so much easier to type on a standard keyboard. I can't imagine writing letters and lengthy emails on a tablet.

I moved the thread to the Blu-ray PC section since that's where the vast majority of PC related topics are posted.

But how much time do you use your pc? How many emails do you send a week? I and many others just don't need one for much. I couldn't tell you the last time I had to send an email, for anything other than business. Text messaging is killing emails. Gaming was huge for the pc market, but now with PS3, Wii, & Xbox hooked up to your home theater system who wants to sit in front of a small monitor doing that?

You haven't had to upgrade your pc in four years and you're surprised sales are down?

Talk about answering your own question

I'll answer that if I may. I use my PC roughly 6 hours a day and I know I couldn't be as productive doing what I do on a Tablet, much less my phone.

I can see the need for your situation. I use a pc all day @ work, which I need for that. But for home use, I don't need one.

That's exactly what my Dad and I were hypothesizing, and it could also be that a lot of people just bought so they won't need to get on for the next 5 or 6 years. I don't know if Laptops are considered PC's but my 15" Macbook goes through my receiver so I get amazing stereo sound, and to my 55" TV.

Sorry but no tablets for me at home, impossible to play The Old Republic on a tablet. Give me a PC with a nice 32 inch HD monitor anytime over a silly 7 inch tablet screen

A lot of people you can pretty easily hook up a home theater system to a PC and play video games and have excellent sound as well as much better visuals. My friends dad had his PC sound running through a receiver to Tannoy speakers.

I'm certainly not advocating replacing the pc, just stating why I believe the sales are declining. I know there are variables, and everyone has their need. I just see the steady decline of their use for the future.

Cool

Microsoft blew it with windows 8. That extra layer of interface turned people off. Any discussion of Apple is irrelevant here.

Microsoft is so far behind on windows phone (which has a great os but terrible music system and lack of apps.) and the integration of its Surface tablet with the new os.

It's a tough time in Redmond these days.

Laptops are probably going to be as much of a PC that will sell for anyone who doesn't have to "bring work home" or doesn't have a "work from home" employment situation. Even then, laptops are gaining a lot of ground with that demographic as well. It's just not worth having a desktop PC these days. Having to have an entire desk unit is just not worth it at home. And, since more and more work related endeavours are becoming digital, the need for drawers and storage and printers and supplies is dwindling too.

So, that being said, since the majority of people are casual with their "computer related" activities, the less room it takes up and the easier it is to store away out of sight, the better it is. There is no need to have an entire 5% to 15% of living space taken up by electronics and supporting furniture that will be used mainly for e-mails and surfing the internet.

I've actually started to use my iPhone more frequently than my laptop for surfing the internet and e-mailing. But, then I also get to do all of my internet stuff while on breaks at work and in other scenarios where I'm not at home. So, this allows me to actually spend quality time at home instead of sitting in front of a computer screen. I'm guessing that the same is happening for many many many others.

I use a 2009 iMac (which is not considered a PC) for work and storage.
An iPad Mini for internet browsing and email in bed
and a Dumbphone for calls and text.

All e mails will be answered at work or home. Since I switched to a dumb phone I am more in touch with the real world.
