[Barbossa]

The Libertine is one of those films that was fairly roundly trashed by the critics and flopped at the box office, and yet ......... I absolutely loved it.

Can't really fault it to be honest, and Depp gave an outstandingly brilliant performance as the decaying Rochester. In fact, I'd say that it was Depp's best performance, easily outshining his usual 'kooky' characters.

I can see why it might not appeal to everyone, but it sure did appeal to me on so many levels.

Also major kudos to Rosamund Pike and Samantha Morton in their roles.

An easy 10/10 from me.

Great film! One of Depp's best performances, and the cinematography is great. I think it capture the times quiet will, also.

I totally forgot about this movie...never seen it, but remember wanting to. I will have to try to rent it, or wait till it comes to blu-ray.

Agreed. I believe that the lighting used was all natural, akin to Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon'.

I fear it may be a while coming to Blu-ray, so I'd advise renting it (or buying it on DVD, it's not expensive).

It was scheduled for release months ago...No web site had it but Best Buy and it was on back order since day one....Now it's completely been removed..Did this blu never see the light of day?

got the widescreen DVD brand new for $1 at Dollar Tree a week or so ago, that will hold me over til the blu release.

Been a while since I've seen it, but my overall impression was that it was a fantastic performance by Depp but overall I thought the movie was just ok. I wouldn't have liked it at all if not for Depp's performance. Thus I've never bought it as I'm not sure I'd watch it again, and can just Netflix it if I get the desire.

I loved both aspects, ie Depp's performance and the movie as a whole (but admittedly Depp steals the show - such a shame that relatively few people have seen his excellent performance in this).
