To many this is Spielberg's main misstep; however (and I may be in the minority), I consider it an absolute wonderful film. It is a WWII It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. It is extremely irreverent and over the top, and, to many, offensive, but that is the point. It shows with extremes how foolish people can be. Every single character is an idiot. They are prejudiced, ill-mannered, and moronic, but manage to come together after their idiocy destroys a town. I really wish we could see a release of this. The DVD was awful. Not animorphic and only the extended version, which I think alters the pacing. It is on iTunes, but the version when I rented it did not have subtitles during the scenes on the submarine. A perfect world would have a Criterion release with both versions of the film. I think you can also make a case that it is John Williams' best score. Of all maligned movies out there, this is the one where I think is the most misunderstood.
