Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Complete Series (1986-1990)

According to the Digital Bits, Shout! and Paul Reubens is hard at work in restoring this series.

First up, on our own Digital Bits BD Producers panel, we exclusively revealed that Shout! Factory is currently hard at work on a fully-remastered Blu-ray box set of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series. The show was originally finished on 1-inch analog tape, but it was shot on film and star Paul Rubens has all the original 16 and 35mm negative. So it’s all being scanned in full HD and then digitally restored and remastered. Rubens himself is working closely with producer Brian Ward and the Shout! team to create new special features, so it should be pretty terrific. We showed a special video preview during our panel that offered fans a glimpse of the restoration work, with before and after comparisons. It looks absolutely amazing! (We’ll see if there’s any chance we can show it to you here.) The set is expected to be released sometime in early 2014. The exact time frame will depend on how long it takes to finish the restoration properly – they don’t want to rush it, they want to get it right. Watch this space for more details.

i'm very curious to re-visit this show but i'm not sure it's worth a purchase. was there some incredibly hidden adult humor that i never understood watching it as a child? i know that Pee Wee's original stand-up comedy was not so family friendly...

neither was his two Cheech & Chong film appearances family friendly!
I believe he was in Next Mivie and Nice Dreams

I'll get this set, it was such a part of my childhood and I want it to be part of my kids childhood as well.

Is it just the series or are we talking about the specials as well?

I just said Oh My God out loud when I saw this.
Very excited, but don't think I'd spend a lot on this set.
I used to watch this show back in 2006/2007, I loved it, they played it on Adult Swim and I loved it.

That was the case with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure... kid friendly when I was a kid but watching it as a 30-something, I get some of the darker humor that wasn't quite so evident when I was six.

Finally, you may recall that, at our Comic-Con panel this past July, Shout!’s Brian Ward announced that the studio is working with Paul Rubens to bring the Pee-Wee’s Playhouse TV series to Blu-ray Disc. Brian confirmed during last night’s podcast that work continues on the release and that the title should be out by the holidays this year, if not sooner.

I'll get this once the entire series is out.
Knowing how Brian Ward works now after his debacle and lies with the Power Rangers there will be a "complete" series set with exclusive stuff, while making fans pay a premium price for individual sets with bonus features and then leave the bonus features off of the last set so that they can make an excuse to justify selling the Series set.

Hopefully this will include the bonus features they were gonna use for the DVD complete series set that never happened.

I've never seen any evidence that any work was done on the never-delivered ultimate set from Image.
