Default DTS-HD 5.1 vs DTS 5.1?

I want to import Howl's Moving Castle on Blu-ray. I see that there is a Japanese language track in DTS-HD 5.1. There is an English track with DTS 5.1. Will I notice a huge difference between DTS-HD and DTS?

If you have a decent 5.1 surround speaker system and a receiver than can decode lossless audio you will.

DTS HD 5.1 is a clearer channel separation and more of a natural sound then just regular DTS

Agreed.
Plus the original Japanese audio will provide a much more accurate listening experience anyway. Too much emotion is lost any time dubbing is applied for convenience.

Yes, there is a huge difference between the 2 (better dynamics, clarity, separation, oomph, potency, detail, ...)

Normal 756kbps DTS and Lossless not too hard.
Between Lossless and DTS at 1.5mpbs, hard to tell very hard to tell. Lossless will feel better though.

According to the BDInfo scan for the Japanese release of Howl's Moving Castle, the English DTS track is half-rate (i.e. 768kbps) so the difference should be rather noticable.

It's not always the case. Personally I find that the English version of Howl can stand toe to toe with the JP one.

Speaking of DTS, I just watched Face/Off on blu-ray tonight, and the core DTS- 6.1 ES Discrete sounded pretty darn good for a lossy soundtrack. I was surprised! And another good sounding DTS 6.1 soundtrack is Black Rain.

I guess I'll wait then for the American release, because I like to see the movie in English (also I want to get around the menus with ease).

Why spend almost 3 times the price to watch a movie on Blu-ray (with a lossy English track) before it comes to the U.S.?

The packaging looks great, and I've really wanted to see Howl's Moving Castle on Blu-ray, but I'm leaning toward not importing it.

One more question I have is that it says the DTS-HD Japanese track is 6.1 surround sound. I have a 5.1 system. Will I even be able to use surround sound for the DTS-HD?

It’ll just “split” the 6th channel into your rears I believe.

Thanks. I've never heard of 6.1. Is that a Japanese thing?
