If anyone could help or advise, it would be greatly appreciated.
I've just bought an Onkyo 3200 from a friend of a friend and got it hooked up to my Sony BDP S-360 using a coaxial cable. It's working fine, but I'm only getting 2.1 audio from the 5.1 system. Looking through the operator's manual for the 360, I've made the appropriate adjustments in the audio menu for me to be getting 5.1 sound, but it's made no difference. I've tried a few blu-ray's with 5.1 sound such as 'Back to the Future' and have navigated my way through the audio options while the film has been playing, but I'm only getting 2.1 options on the screen. Seems a little strange when the disc carries 5.1 sound. I've even tried one of the THX optimizers on one of my dvds and each sound sample comes through the 2 front speakers except for the sub. My audio settings on the blu-ray player are: Audio Output Priority - Coaxial/Optical Audio (HDMI) - Auto BD Audio Setting - Mix Audio ATT - Off Dolby Digital -Dolby Digital DTS -DTS 48kHz/96kHz PCM - 48kHz/16bit Audio DRC - Auto Downmix - Dolby Surround Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Not really an expert on this, but is your receiver set to auto/5.1?
This is speaking for the Marantz situation (though I'm doubting this isn't the same with every receiver) you can choose how you want it to output audio. The receiver was set on auto, which means it outputs it as it is (so stereo=stereo, DTS 5.1=DTS 5.1), but you can also choose from DTS Neo: 6 or Stereo for example. Maybe it is still on the Stereo setting (as your sub also doesn't output sound)? |

Are you using HDMI for video from the player to the TV? Sometimes the HDMI handshake with a TV will force a stereo output, although when the Audio Output Priority is set to Optical/Coax that shouldn't happen with a Sony. As a test, you can try disconnecting the HDMI cable to see if you start getting surround.
The Mix setting should only matter with HDMI. And the rest of your settings look correct. The key ones are Priority and the Dolby/DTS outputs. The others don't matter. What kind of input does your AVR report it is getting? |

Thanks for all the replies, it's much appreciated.
After a little bit of messing around I found the speaker select buttons on the receiver. I've now managed to get sound from the 2 front speaker's, the centre speaker, the sub, but ONLY sound from the right surround speaker. Nothing from the left. With regards to HDMI connections, I have an HDMI from the Blu-Ray player straight to the TV. What 's baffling me is that I've been using 5.1 blu-ray films to test the system and even selected 5.1 sound from the audio menu's on the discs. Now when the film plays and I use the audio button the remote to see what kind of audio is playing, it's only showing as 2.1. |

Have you run the test tones on the receiver to confirm that all speakers are proiperly wired and output sound? There's no setting on the player or receiver that would account for audio from one surround speaker, but not the other.
