Or in another way this cinema chain is penalizing punters who have turned off the niche gimmick, they are going to not only raise-cinema tickets so the large majority of movie viewers pay for the dying 3D-fad. But that this may then trickle down into the bluray home purchaser market if the film-industry see the public not mind paying more! I will not be paying a premium on top of a normal cinema tickets to help cover the cost or industries upgrades to smooth out there projected pay-outs of the endless mind numbing "in three dee" malarkey. http://boingboing.net/2012/03/24/the...premium-o.html So now we have to boycott 2D at cinema's?!?! too get the message across to the 3D-loveie's at hollywood because they mindlessly ignore the publics slow uptake or withdrawal of re-watching 3D films. How clever of them higher-ups; everyone has to pay for the finite few's amusement possibly, and their epic disillusioned investment into this 'upgrade' feature. I won't shed a tear or use pirated material, book's are starting to look even more cooler now. ![]() ![]() ![]() This saves the 3D industry from needing to do a good job, so expect even more half-hearted bodge_job films with crap effects tacked on all in 3Deee. ![]() Does this news make you think about visiting your local cinema less??? But on this note, I begrudgenley (is this a word ![]() I only watch 2D movies at the theater and leave my guilty pleasure 3D viewing for home. I love watching 3D at home! I won't go to the theater anymore if they jack up the prices for 2D viewing for this reason. I am one of the people who don't mind paying an upcharge (well at least I didn't in the past) for 3D because if I want to watch it, I'll have to pay for it. I DON'T believe that 3D should be shoved down anyone's throat, but with this philosophy (at least in the UK which is where this is all stemming from) it sure seems like this is the direction we're going. Granted, ticket prices will increase due to it's just a natural progression of inflation. But the way it's being "explained" or "portrayed", prices of 2D showings will increase to offset the cost of a ticket to the 3D crowd, which I can't support. I think we'll see a true gauge of where 3D is going when the measurements are based off of butts in a seat instead of total revenue. But again, any smart businessman would rather make one sale of $1000 instead of 10 sales of $100. I'm sure if you know business, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Both worlds can live together in my eyes, but don't make someone pay for something to offset a cost of another just to keep it alive. Eventually everyone will lose and that so called smart businessman just may cut off his nose to spite his face. |

As someone who quite enjoys 3D films, I must voice my displeasure with this plan.
First of all, I'm with the other two. 3D is in no way what you see it as. It is not dying out at the cinema right now. Rather, there's still quite a while to go with it. Now that I've said that, I'll move on to why I disagree with this. Sure, the 3D surcharge is an issue with some. However, raising the costs of regular showings just to accomodate 3D is catering to one technology rather close-mindedly. It means that cinemas could end up setting themselves to fail, as this only compliments those that see 3D showings. Those that choose to see 2D showings will just end up, as the term goes, getting 'screwed over' by the cinemas. However, at this moment in time, I'm choosing not to avoid seeing movies at the cinemas, even in 3D. After all, the cinema experience is quite different to just watching a movie at home. Once I got my 3D TV though... Then maybe I'll consider going there less. |

any chance that this is actually related to the Sony decision to quit paying theatres for 3D glasses even though they have a contract to do so?

It's not the case at my theater, Cinemark, as the 2D price remains the same.
As far as raising the 2D price to lower the cost of 3D? That's a really bad idea, because they're two different formats that shouldn't affect the price of the other. 3D fans should have to pay a little more for 3D. 2D fans shouldn't have to pay more for 2D. I'm a stereo 3D fan, as that's how I see in day to day life, but don't go raising the cost of 'bread' just to afford 3D to those who are doing it. ![]() |

So why penalize 2d moviegoers by charging 2d moviegoers an upcharge when they don't charge any upcharges there to see the 3d movies in 3d in the first place??? Oh wait. Now I get it. Never mind. |
