Default Teacher accused of spraying Febreze on student who smelled like fish

Quote:
This time the teacher got a time out.

An elementary school teacher in Newfoundland, Canada has reportedly been put on paid leave as district officials investigate a claim she sprayed a student with an odor eliminator to mask his fishy-smelling lunch.

Patti Rideout told CBC News she was “very hurt and very angry” after learning the teacher of her 10-year-old son, Christian Roberts, had put him in the hallway then sprayed him with Febreze last week.

Other kids at Twillingate Island Elementary School had teased him over the fried capelin meal she’d made him, she said.

"I feel like he's been embarrassed, bullied, and I think what she [did] was very disgraceful," Rideout told CBC News. "I think my son was treated not like a human being — I think he was treated like a dog, or a cat … I'm very hurt and very angry over this."

Rideout told CBC that when she first called her son’s teacher for an apology she hung up.

After taking her concerns to the school board, Rideout received a written apology from the school’s principal and vice principal, St. John’s newspaper The Telegram reported.

“The teacher has offered to make an apology to your son in front of the class,” the letter said.

The teacher deserves whatever school-related punishment she gets. If it were my kid, she'd also get a smack across her face.

Are you kidding!!! They have a right to smell bad and make you want to lose your lunch when you are next to them, the only right you have is to shut up and eat their crap!

I swear!!! I am in the bus on certain days and I have smokers next to me, it's horrible. Their clothing smell so much and I have to breath it and take and shut the hell up cause they have a right to smoke. Well yes you can smoke nbut does not mean I have to stand there and smell you however. I love society these days it's all about MY RIGTHS but never stop to think that your rights can also affect my rights.

Agreed. Someone else's rights end.....right at the entrance into my nose.

As for the poster who said they'd smack the teacher....heh. Riiiiight.

Not unless you want a bigger hassle than this teacher will ever get for this stupid & minor infraction.

That was me, and I stand by what I posted. It goes for anyone who does something so despicable to my children. Minor infractions to you could have lasting affects on young kids. Especially in school. Especially in front of all their friends. Especially when it makes the news.

I'll gladly accept the "bigger hassle" when it comes to my kids. You don't **** with kids.

Someone is going to be very rich over this. Kids today are so lucky they get to sue their schools and cost the taxpayers so much money over something stupid.

I'm sure they will. And the taxpayers will pay for it. Wash your kids and send them some decent food to school or eat at school. Why should everyone else have to smell them?

Mr. Joshua, do you think it's appropriate for a teacher to spray something on a 10-year old at school?

You guys are all forgetting this is a 10 year old. It's not an adult on a bus who knows better. It's a ****ing 10-year old at school getting humiliated by his teacher over some fish his mom sent him to eat. The proper thing to do would have been to walk the kid up to the principal and have the principal call the mom/dad to come get the smelly kid.

It's mindblowing that anyone would find this acceptable.

As long as it was just the food and not the kid then it's stupid, however if the kid smelled foul then I agree a walk to the principles office would be in order.

Hell my wife doesn't even like dropping our son off at the sitters if he needs a diaper change. She will get him back OUT of his car seat (getting him in it is no small feat ) and run inside and change him before we leave...the sitters house is a 2 minute drive from us.

EDIT: Growing up near the University of Cincinnati and the diversity that this created going to grade school meant you smelled ALL SORTS of odd things on the bus and at lunch time

Bill

Exactly -- it's the mom's fault here, not the kid's. Kid shouldn't get punished/embarrassed/whatever over mom's screwup. You simply let the mom know and ask her not to do it again.

But....it's not "f***ing with them". It's fixing a situation that the kids' idiot parents are apparently too stupid to comprehend.

Absolutely. If the child reeks, send him/her home....or make them acceptable to the rest of the students.

Actually, the parents humiliated their own child by sending him into a public place with a box of anchovie paste (or whatever).

As for being "a ****ing 10-year old".....at ten, if you haven't had a few social mis-steps, and learned to adapt accordingly....well, I guess someone in class has to be Napolean Dynamite.

In this economy, it's likely that both parents work. Ya think they want to leave work to pick up their stinky kid? They really don't.

Wrong again. What's mind-blowing is that anyone could possibly get so upset about air freshener.

Why is this about the teacher, who was probably just trying to avoid that the kid would be repeatedly bullied over the fish smell )he even took the kid in the corridor, instead of doing it in class), when the MOM sent a friggin' -10 year old kid- with fried FISH in a bag for lunch?

At school? Really?

That is either a seriously delusional mother about the way kids can treat other, or she purposely intended her kid to be bullied/ treated badly to be able to sue the school and/or district.

Of course, the teacher trying to help (I am guessing) just played in her little game, if that was the case. Let's see if she intends to sue for "emotional distress", which would then show the mom's true colors.

If I'm right, that's yet another "Mom of the year", right there.

Im pretty sure the kid didnt smell...just his lunch...and assuming this is the first time it has happened... a simple phone call to the parents would have sufficed

So the teacher tried to help the kid and is now being punished. The mom is the person who should be ridiculed. Ridiculous.
