Default Do you always choose Blu-ray over DVD?

I'm just curious to know if people always buy the Blu-ray version of a movie over the DVD version, I'm talking about all cases, not just new releases.

Here's an example, I was in HMV the other day looking at the sales and I was going to get Pulp Fiction 2 disc collectors edition on blu ray as part of a deal where I could get 3 blus for €15 but then I found the exact same edition on DVD for €2. I bought the DVD version and chose a different Blu-ray.

In my opinion some movies don't necessarily have to be bought on Blu-ray, they look almost identical on DVD with upscaling, big CGI movies with loads of special effects like Star Trek will look much better on blu then on DVD but for an older movie with less special effects and no big scenery shots or action sequences is it really worth paying the extra money when you could get it cheaper on DVD?

yes, in ALL cases. I WILL not buy an inferior release. I'm the type of guy who double dipped dvd releases 2-3 times just for better encodes or increased fidelity audio tracks in my dvd days... the best or nothing

Yes, always do. You'll read about people buying DVDs of TV shows and comedies because they feel it's not worth it. That's a bunch of hogwash. All they're doing is trying to save $3-5.

Short answer, YES! DVD is so much of an afterthought at this point that it basically doesn't exist in my eyes anymore.

The word DVD only exists in my vocabulary when it's in a Combo Pack of a BD.

Absolutely. I have the Pulp Fiction DVD and Blu-ray btw, and the Blu-ray is vastly superior in every way.

Yes, except when there isn't a Blu-ray available.

Given the choice between Blu-ray and DVD I will always purchase the DVD. I do, however still purchase a few DVD's each year..(i.e. The complete I love Lucy, The Thornbirds) because they are not available on Blu-ray. When those shows are available on Blu, I will upgrade. What is the point to have your money invested in a good HD TV and surround sound and buy a DVD when a Blu is available???? Makes no sense to me.

What's a D V D? ;D

No, but in all seriousness, I never will. I have tv on dvd that I won't get rid of because it's not on blu-ray yet or I don't wanna double dip.
Now, if it's the case where it's not on blu-ray, I won't buy it.
I'll just suffer.

Needless to say, Californication NEEDS to come out on blu-ray.

Unless the Blu-Ray's overall A/V presentation is somehow inferior to the DVD in some way, yes, I will always go for the Blu-Ray.

the only dvds i'd buy are music concerts or music videos of a band that arent available on bluray. But seeing how they arent releasing all of the Sopranos seasons on BD - i might have to get the dvd collection since its my fave show.

Absolutely. I began buying Blu-Rays in July of 2008 and bought a mix until mid to late 2009. I haven't purchased a DVD since unless there's been no alternative.

I'll still watch some of the DVDs I own on occasion, but I've replaced a good number of titles that I love and gotten rid of their DVD counterparts.

The one exception I generally make is South Park. I own all of the seasons and buy the new ones on delay as they come down in price. I like to get them dirt cheap, and the Blu-Rays rarely go that low, so I just stick with the DVDs.

I agree with you if its worth watching its worth watching right!! I've double dipped in the past on dvds as well. Now I tend to research the title and either see if it will drop in price or if a better version coming out!

Sometimes its worth it. For example Gangs of New York. I couldn't justify the price and then when I finally decided to pull the trigger peeps were complaining about PQ etc and their should be a recall and a reprint......... and their was.
