Default Heathers - an EW oral history

Still one of the best high school movies of all time. I'd actually take this over most John Hughes movies any day.

EW.com ran this "oral history" article which had a number of fun revelations. Brad Pitt read JD at the original script reading! There was almost a Heathers TV show that next year (1990)! And the Heathers sequel that never was, co-starring Meryl Streep!
...and a few not-so-shocking revelations. ...Shannon Dougherty was a b!tch?!? The hell you say!!

full article here:

25th anniversary... that's crazy. I am old.

on a side note, I wish I lived in NY so I could go see the musical!

The ending I should’ve fought harder for is where Martha Dumptruck pulls out a knife, stabs Veronica, and says, “F— you, Heather.” And Veronica’s on the ground laughing, with a knife in her stomach, saying, “My name’s not Heather. My name’s not Heather.”
That is brilliant.

Still my all-time favorite movie.

Fantastic read, thanks for bringing it up. I love Heathers, and it's a treat to hear how still passionate (especially Ryder's adoration) is regarding it. I've never heard any actor talk about watching their own movie 50 times on cable before. Good stuff.

did anyone else here actually see this in the theater during its original release?

I remember seeing it when it first opened and there were less than 10 people in there with me. The film only made like $1.1M in theaters, so apparently most other theaters were empty, too.
It not only instantly became one of my favorite movies, but one of the most quotable. Half the lines in the film have been integrated into my everyday vocabulary, and still are 25 years later.

I totally did. I was a young skate punk at the time and thought Slater was the coolest ever for years. Seriously, between Gleaming The Cube, Heathers and Pump Up The Volume, I wanted to be Slater.

No joke, my high school yearbook quote was one of J.D.'s lines: "The extreme always seems to make an impression."
