Default The Poseidon Adventure U.S. release announcement

It's finally coming! April 3rd...but as a Walmart exclusive...Ugh! At least it's finally being released...1st day purchase for me...even though FOX assed out and gave it shoddy cover art and the Walmart nonsense! Really thought after this long wait that we would see a grand 40th anniversary release of this classic...Oh well....
See the announcement on the home page of bluray.com and also on Walmart page for pre-order.

I'm with you! I thought that it would be announced in a special breaking news flash across every television screen in the world! Well, maybe not THAT dramatic, but I did think it would get a little better sendoff. The cover art is ok, and I don't care about the Wal-Mart thing, my WM is pretty good at getting these titles. I just want a first class presentation on the picture and sound. The Towering Inferno is a great blu ray, so I have no doubt that TPA will be too!!! Happy watching on April 3!!!!

I'm sorry but what's the point of this new thread? It's already been announced and there is even a thread for The Poseidon Adventure a couple threads below not to mention the thread at the NA section.

Sorry KrugerIndustrial...some of us are just very excited about this release...I know for me it's the whole reason I got a blu ray player 3 years ago...have been waiting a long time for this title...But, I guess it didn't need a new thread

I think with this being the films 40th Anniversary and the fact that this movie has a huge cult following made a lot of us think it would be handled better by FOX...instead it seems to be just thrown out like it's no big deal...this film made a lot of money for FOX...seems they would have given it a nice case like those on Patton or Tora, Tora, Tora...and perhaps some new features/interviews in honor of it's anniversary...

As long as the quality is excellent and it looks great on my widescreen, I don't really care. A special case would be extra fluff that brings the cost of the bluray up.

Why does it matter? First of all, not sure where you live, but unlike the South (I'm originally from Texas) it is next to impossible to find a Walmart in the Los Angeles area...they have tried and tried to build stores here but the communities always keep them out (thank God) and secondly, when you do find one it's about a 20 mile drive to find it...then when you do walk in they are completely disgusting, dirty and poorly staffed and organized and RARELY do you find someone that speaks English or knows anything about any item sold in the store! Third...Good luck finding any product advertised in the store once you get there...I don't think I have ever gone into a Walmart here and found the product they are supposed to have...you ask a salesperson and they have NO idea what you're talking about...I tried at 2 different stores on multiple occasions to find the so called (blu ray exclusive) copy of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World...and eventually bought it off of Amazon (the only place to shop)....Hopefully that answers some questions and why I'm so sad that FOX has decided to bargain basement this great title...And for the record...Best Buy exclusives are no better...Good Luck ever finding the item advertised in the sale flyer on Sunday, in stock...I don't know how many times I have gone to the local Best Buy and had to get a rain check...so frustrating...I guess I will be ordering The Poseidon Adventure from the Walmart website as I refuse to walk into one of their stores (and since I have no other option...thanks FOX) and go through the frustration of it not being there...I hate Walmart...

I really want this excellent movie.. and have no problem with purchasing it at Walmart. We have four Walmarts where I live.. they are all clean, usually have good blu-ray inventory and the employees are friendly... of course, I live in Texas.

I quite agree. In San Antonio the Walmart stores are well looked after and well stocked with Blu-Rays - new releases and classics as well. The Poseidon Adventure now has an official release date at last. Yeah! As for Walmart... here in Texas we expect better and get it. There are advantages to living here in Texas.

OK, let's see if they made a new transfer or used the old dvd version (special edition). How can we tell . . after the main titles and the shot of Robin climbing the stairs in the rainstorm, the teaser comes on . . At midnught, on New Year's Eve . . . there is a small hair to the top left of the screen hanging straight down. This is something that I really just noticed, so if the blu ray has this . . any thoughts. I also noticed that on the special edition dvd of The Towering Inferno, there is a projector scratch during the title The Towering Inferno, and yes, it's in the same place on the blu ray. Now I'm projecting on a pretty large screen, so these things are more easily seen. Again, any thoughts?

After the disaster that was My Fair Lady and the botched transfer of West Side Story ... just getting The Poseidon Adventure to Blu-Ray is going to be worth the wait. I'm not being cynical, really. But anything is possible and if it's not been given the TLC it deserves we'd best make it known. I'm sure it will be a fine transfer. The Towering Inferno was treated decently which must be a good sign.

I know...you are quite right...I DO miss Texas for many reasons...just went back there in January to see my folks and noticed how much nicer the stores are...much cleaner and well staffed and people that work there actually talk to you and say hello...haha I think I've been jaded by living in L.A. too long!!!

I didn't end up buying My Fair Lady due to bad reviews of the disc...was it really as bad as all that? Very sad...I truly thought that one would look great on blu ray...guess I will wait....I sure hope a better job is done on TPA

I have no fears, I'm sure it will look great. The HD transfer that shows on (UK) TV every now & again looks superb. I don't think the cover looks too bad, it's a lot better than the It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World BD cover, & look how good that transfer is.

That's true...the "Mad World" cover was terrible...but the transfer was amazing...so I'm keeping my hopes high

I don't know why, but I watched the dvd again last night and I was amazed at how good the picture looked (even for upconverted dvd)! Of course, the blu ray will be sharper and sound better, but, I do have to admit, the dvd looks pretty good! AND did you know that when TPA came out in 1972 it was only one of a handfull of movies (in the history of the Academy Awards) that got Academy Award nominations in every technical catagory that they had at the time. Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes, Film Editing, Original Score, Original Song and Sound. It was voted a special Oscar for Visual Effects. (And Shelley Winters was nominated for Best Supp. Actress) It only won two(!), Cabaret was the big winner that night. But, IMO, it should have won for Art Direction, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound and above all, John Williams amazing score (one of his best). Sorry about the rambling, but, whatever! AND eight nominations but it was NOT nominated for Best Picture(?)

I agree...what an amazing film...and so many award nominations...and like you said, and I'm not taking anything away from Cabaret...but I think TPA should have won many of the technical awards...TPA has beautiful cinematography...even during murky scenes like Mrs. Rosen's death, there is a certain beauty to the lighting and framing...I love it...and it should have won for best score!

Now, about that score! I remember when "The Poseidon Adventure" was released in Dec. 1972, I went crazy for the original soundtrack! John Williams was not JOHN WILLIAMS yet but the music was fantastic . . it added so much to the movie (which is what a music score should do). I went to buy the record BUT no soundtrack was issued! EVERYTHING then had a soundtrack album released, but, NO!! The closest thing I could get was Maureen McGovern's "The Morning After". It only took DECADES for an original soundtrack album to be released! One by Film Score Monthly and one by La La Land records. (I jumped on those two puppies the moment they were offered!) I still think that it is one of Williams best scores and I can't believe it did not win the Oscar! "The Towering Inferno"'s score was top flight also! ANOTHER reason to be stoked about TPA on blu ray . . THE SCORE!
