Question Are 1st Editions/Pressings Collectable Like Records

I've been wondering...are first pressings/editions of hard-to-find and or limited edition Blu-Rays worth more money than their reprints or newer editions? I know a few titles that always seem to sell for more than what the newer versions are worth at physical and online retailers.
These include:
Mission Impossible
Mission Impossible 3
Evil Dead 2
Beauty & The Beast
The Sky Captain and The World Of Tomorrow
Casablanca
REDS (foil edges)
UP

Why are some of the older pressings/editions worth more than newer ones? I know that vinyl/record enthusiasts like first editions pressings because of the superior sound or rarity, but I don't know why some Blu-Ray titles have such erratic price differences for re-releases or pressings other than artwork.
