Default Multi-Vitamins. Anyone take them?

Well, just freshly turning 40, the wife really wants me to take a Multi-Vitamin. Picked up some Men's One A Day from Costco this evening. Just wondering if others are taking them too?

I probably should start taking them. Girlfriend does and has been hinting I should.

Ah women.

I don't eat enough greeny stuff so I take two of these everyday.

P.S. Congrats on the big 4-0, jb.

Shortly after I started taking a multi (don't recall which one) I was shipped up north on a drilling rig in one of the worst cold spells I've ever been in. Management messed up and we had to stay four weeks instead of the usual two. It was very harsh and on my third week I had a lil chat with the Driller. I said that I should've been close to, or at my limit and yet I wasn't. (Drilling Rigs are extremely intense, physically and mentally) He asked if I was doing something different. I said yeah, I started taking multi-vitamins. He said that that's exactly why I was handling it better. He said he'd been on them for a while and would never go without them.

jbig31, yes multi's have a positive effect. I definitely recommend using them.

I've been reading about them recently because I wanted to get the best or close to it. From what I've read, a lot of the multi-vitamins you get at the grocery store, GNC, health stores, etc. aren't exactly the best. A lot if them have fillers and, supposedly, there are only a handful that are actually worth a darn.

Not sure how trustworthy this is, but I stumbled across this one while researching: http://www.multivitaminguide.org/best-multivitamin.html

Anyway, I had been taking the Kroger version of Men's One-A-Day, but now I'm trying Source Naturals Life Force Multiple: http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1194/

I've also started taking fish oil capsules:http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/fin...846372-product

I'm not recommending what is best, but just what I've researched. I would certainly welcome the opinion of anyone that is more experienced in this matter.

no need - i get all the vitamins from the food i eat. it does not change how old you are...if you eat too much they just come out of your system. it does not do you any good.

Not only that, but articles published in the past couple of years are rebuking the long-held belief that multivitamins are beneficial, and may even be harmful in some cases.

From Prevention magazine (November 2010):
Quote:
.....a tsunami of scientific data has resulted in a reversal in thinking among many experts in the health and nutrition community, including Miriam Nelson, PhD, director of the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity at Tufts University. "The multivitamin as insurance policy is an old wives' tale, and we need to debunk it," she says.

The sea change is supported by two massive studies. The first, a review of 63 randomized, controlled trials (the gold standard research method) on multivitamins, published by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, found that multis did nothing to prevent cancer or heart disease in most populations (the exception being developing countries where nutritional deficiencies are widespread). In the second paper, published last year, scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center followed 160,000 postmenopausal women for about 10 years. The researchers' conclusion: "Multivitamins failed to prevent cancer, heart disease, and all causes of death for all women. Whether the women were healthy eaters or ate very few fruits and vegetables, the results were the same," says the lead author, Marian Neuhouser, PhD.

"There is even a small body of evidence that may suggest harm from a multi," says David Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine. A 2010 study of Swedish women found that those who took multivitamins were 19% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer over a 10-year period than those who didn't. A 2007 paper in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men who took multivitamins along with other supplements were at increased risk of prostate cancer. And other research has linked excessive folic acid intake to higher colon cancer risk in people who are predisposed. "In terms of a risk-benefit ratio," says Dr. Katz, "why would you accept even a tiny risk if you're not getting any benefit?"

I used to take Multivitamins, but didn't notice any difference in any aspect of my well being so knocked it on the head.

I then started taking Calcium tablets, as it's been scientifically proven that ingestion of Calcium can help to excrete fat from the body (by binding itself to fat in the stomach and intestine).

Eating low-fat products rich in calcium such as yoghurt etc. has the same effect.

I used to take One A Day, but found that their pills were difficult for me to swallow. I might check out BJ's Club and get some Gummy Bear Vitamins since they are pretty tasty.

I take Vitamin D supplements. I had my blood tested during my last physical and the doctor said my Vitamin D level was really low. He gave me a number -- 14.

I take two 1000 IU supplements daily.

You can use the "ignore" feature if he won't kindly agree to your request. I've only ever done it twice, but I was forced to do it today for one poster.

Multi-vitamins are generally not needed for the average person and most brands at the local retail level are junk. This is a question that really depends on your age and gender, as each sex requires differing key nutrients.

One brand I can recommend is Focus Factor (pricey but available at places like Costco) if you feel like you absolutely need to try a multi-vitamin. It dissolves better than any other brand, a major problem for brands like Centrum where the pills are so compressed they are defecated untouched without absorbing much of the nutrients.

Most people would be better off skipping the average multi-vitamin and instead adding a daily dose of Omega-3 Fish Oil and 2000-4000 IU of vitamin D-3. Virtually the entire American population is deficient in vitamin D because of shifts in the culture and workforce. The vitamin D softgels (avoid other forms that are poorly absorbed) are extremely cheap for a month supply.
