I just got done watching "detective dee and the mystery of the phantom flame" on my 55inch gt30. I dont have words to describe the video quality of this film. I have over 50 blu-rays but this disc by far is so jaw droping. Not just every scene but every single pixel... they are popping out to the max level without being over saturated or anything. If u have a panny plasma i highly recommend this movie in your collection... because i am sure when u show off your tv this is the movie to play!... by the way make sure u watch this movie in " Vivid " mode with the default vivid settings... rarely there are things that look this mind blowing in vivid mode without being over saturated....enough said, get this blu-ray and show off your tv!.. 2 big thumbs up...

There are times when I prefer vivid on my TV too, although it stays on the non saturated setting 99% of the time.

I have yet to watch that movie, might give it a try.

to each to his own. U can't comment on this movie untill u get the copy yourself. As i mentioned rarely any movie looks more then fantastic in vivid mode. This disc was meant to be seen in vivid and on panasonic. brightness/colors/pixels go to the max, where u can see what a good plasma can do. There are alot of things each person likes in a picture quality. I personally drool when the colors are popping out and the brightness is just perfect and bright without ruining the picture... other people might like the total opposite so yeah.

I don't see what is so wrong with somebody watching their blu-ray's how they enjoy them the most. Sure some might 100% accurate to ISF standards but that isn't for everybody, just as in music some like more treble some like more bass, etc. Exactly why they offer consumers options.

I bet the % of people on this forum alone that have their displays 100% accurate to ISF standards is in the single digits.

I always assumed this movie was a childrens movie so I never gave any thought...just added to my netflix que, thanks!

oh and guys, lets not crap on threads because you don't agree with someone.

No need to lecture on the pro's and con's of vivid...the guy liked the movie with his own personal preference!

move on.

well said. Usually it always take a few tweaks when watching blu-rays.. like going back n forth in picture mode for example to see what looks good. This movie looked so incredible just by pressing vivid... the way it was meant to be seen .. " most colorful film i have ever made " - tsui hark- ... thats why i was saying just press vivid for this movie if u have a panny and u r all set. At the end of the day it still comes down to what single person's eyes would prefer.

Even i believe that vivid mode looks great in my panny. But only difference is that i have this option under every settings. And the main settings are like dymanic mode, normal mode, photo mode, cinema mode,professional1 and professional2.And vivid settings comes under contrast, brightness, sharpness setting kind of option. So i can engage this settings under normal mode or any other mode. And iam planning to make a youtube video of my settings since i cannot explain much, since my plasma is an asian edition made in thailand.
But i have engaged vivid mode for all the HDMI inputs like DTH-HD,WD player,BD and PC connected via hdmi garaphic card that supports 1080 resolution.
And i tried disabling this vivid setting under normal mode, the entire picture quality started looking like normal SD feed.Once i engage it appears like a HD TV and far less irritating compared to a normal LCD TV.And by the way i do not like LCD for its brightness and very glaring poping colours.
As some have mentioned, personal preference & taste differs from person to person. And my viewing taste seems to be very similar to yours ! And there is no point in buying a HD tv and viewing it all faded or lifeless pictures.
And one should believe ones eyes and not simply believing what others have to say...
And most here view plasma in dark rooms or dim light halls. But i view my plasma in normal lighting. So that may be the reason why i like peppy colours.

No.

You guys can say it is personal preference, but that does NOT mean its better.

Thats like saying "Driving the steering wheel with my feet is better than my hands!" or "Wow, MP3 is better than cd, the songs are a lot louder!"

You liking something more doesn't mean in any way it is better. Its a bastardized version of the source material.

Iam glad we have disagreement, but here i ment setting my tv to my viewing preference and none here have compelled others to follow or try what we are doing. And opnion like yours is what have driven many readers to go in for LCD's.While every plasma can output lively colours either in vivid mode or dynamic mode. And we are not contesting that our method of viewing is correct.
And you have compared driving car & listening to Cd's with our personal colour settings. If one drives like that road accidents is bound to occur. And one cannot carry along ones entire cd collection on the move,So for the need of compressed audio format for personal media players & walkman.
I don't see that my personal viewing with bright colours has anything to do with the above. And i have bought my plasma to see programs the way my eyes want to see.And neither do i believe seriously in calibration since every movie or video content needs tweaking up anyone of the settings.
I drive my car safely and i do listen to Cd's & Dvd Audio a lot.
And as i have told before personal taste & preference differs from person to person. And for me seeing is believing and not simply believing whats in the notes.
And iam not arguing with you....

Watching tv in vivid mode with over saturated colours seems to be a fetish that a lot of people have, it certainly used to be for me too. Before I joined this site (and for about the 1st month after) I didn't know anything about calibration. I set my 2 Bravia's both to vivid mode straight out of the box, thinking they looked great, not knowing any better. After getting in a small disagreement with an Australian member (who has now been banned due to a disagreement with a gaming mod) over calibration, I decided to research the topic and found that the member I disagreed with over the issue was in fact right. From there I searched out calibration settings from various websites and gave them a try. Eventually I found some settings that a professional isf calibrator had submitted from his own measured findings for the bravia xbr 4, which I tried and thought were perfect. It took me a few days to adjust to the brightness not being as high, but once I had gotten over it, it was easy to see that the overall detail in the picture was much better when calibrated in movie mode.

Avatar is actually a good movie for proving to yourself that vivid (and having the backlight on an LCD set to full) is a poor mode to use. If you go to the scene where Jake is exploring Pandora outside of the base for the very 1st time with the scientist, and pay attention to the Problemuris which swings on the tree. Pause it on that scene and swap between vivid and movie mode, you can see straight away how horrible vivid mode looks. On vivid all the colors on the Problemuris are smeared, and the detail on the skin of the animal is lost in a blob of colour. Also focus on the yellow spots/markings on the Problemuris, the yellow colours go out of the lines and seep into the purple/blue areas of skin when they shouldn't.

Now after watching calibrated displays for over a year (To calibrate my Samsung pn59d8000 plasma, I bought and used the Spears and Munsil calibration disc), I sometimes change the tv's to vivid mode for 20-30 seconds just to remind myself of how I used to watch tv and horrible it looked. When I do this, especially in the dark, vivid now causes me eye strain and hurts my eyes due to how bright it is, so I can't imagine it being too good for your eyes over the years.

My Netflix copy arrived, and I started watching last night...but was extremely tired so only made halfway through...will finish tonight.

Well I gave it a try using Vivid, but it was just too over saturated for my liking. I had to keep it on my D-Nice settings. Overall you were right, the picture is phenomenal. For a 2D movie it had excellent depth. But for me, Vivid, is just too much.

The movie overall has been fun and different (in a good way)...the attack and fighting scenes are well done, think Matrix vs. Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon.

I prefer my audio to be in native language, I cannot stand watching foreign films dubbed with English.

But I was getting fatigue trying to read the subtitles while keeping an eye on the fighting scenes.

I was also watching this movie in the bedroom, so my wife made me keep the volume real low ...maybe one day I'll give a try in my living room HT.

Overall I'm glad you pointed this movie out, definitely enjoying the action.
