Default What The Hell Happened To Music?

For fun, at the end of every year, I like to check out the songs that Billboard has determined to be the best of the year. This year I actually almost threw up in my mouth looking at it.

Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2016

Yep, I've heard about two of those songs (that I know of). If you'll excuse me, I have to go yell at some kids that are on my lawn.

I just looked at the list and I only found four singers from the country music field granted I didn't overlook anyone.

Florida Georgia Line
Thomas Rhett
Taylor Swift
Tim McGraw

To me, them singers are good, but there are many more where they came from.

God bless you and them four singers and my favorites always!!!

Holly

P.S. It is asked here what has happened to music. Well in my opinion, the best singer in my opinion isn't here anymore and what makes that worse for me is the fact that I didn't discover him until just after his going forward last year, I love my late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal SO much!!! Y'all who are fans of those who are not here anymore, if your discovery of them took place before they went forward, I want you to hang on to that with all that you have, if they mean enough to you that is because that is something that at least one person will never have.....me.

That's all just pop music. There's plenty of great music being made still, just don't look for it on the radio.

Music is alive and well! You just have to know where to look for it, and the Billboard Top 100 Singles charts isn't really one of them.

I was scrolling down the list thinking "There'll be at least one Artist or song that I'd listen to."
Scrolling...scrolling...scrolling...It didn't happen.

Some of those artists are younger than my children. I wonder if that has something to with it?
I'm curious if there could be a list broken down by an age demographic and what I'd see?

Actually, there's no need to wonder. When at concerts, I'm older than 93.6 percent of the people there.

Yes there's still good music out there.

...you just have to look a lot harder for it than you used to.

I admit I like some of the actual music, but I rather so, so much more music from the 70's/80's. Actually, one of the things that most makes me ''angry'' is the fact that I didn't lived during those years, cause I was born in '96. I would give everything to have a time machine and live during the 70's/80's.

so much of this years music was so blah, unmemorable and generic sounding i can only think of three albums that stood out to me were the new albums from Plaid, Vangelis and The Avalanches

There's plenty of good music out there. It's just that, as always, you can't rely on the popular radio stations to give it to you. You have to seek it out.

Well, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and Prince are gone, and no more U2 songs on the radio unless they are the old songs that everyone has heard thousands of times, plus there are stupid pop acts out there to cater to dumb teenagers that aren't willing to listen to what's good (ie. the stuff before their time).... that's what has happened to music.

I have the answer:

Pop music has been taken over by those "written by committee" parasites. The kind that make much of the MCU rather homogenized gray sludge (except with a few exceptions here and there).

Their own goal is to make the most soulless, faceless, money making palatable gunk imaginable.

That's really all it comes down to.

As for other music, a lot of it is thriving, but is delegated to underground movements at best.

Others are saying what I would say. There is still good music out there. How many times have you seen the comments on YT when you're watching a song from the 90's or earlier. "Oh they don't make music like this anymore". Hell yeah good music is still being made.
JamesOtto, I saw you mentioned Thomas Rhett. I just made a lyrics video for his Die A Happy Man. I had never heard it until this year's CMAs. Damn good song and I freaking love Maren Morris' My Church. Have you heard My Church?

^^^ I have and in my opinion, Maren sounds too much like Kasey Musgraves...boring.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. This right here is my newest favorite song on the radio. In my opinion, it couldn't be anymore traditional and fun!

That was a pretty good song James. So weird to call a woman by the name James I definitely like that traditional sounding country. My favorite artist is probably Alan Jackson. (country artist that is). The last few country songs I've really liked are My Church and Jolene by Zac Brown Band. Hmm, not sure what other new country songs I've liked actually. I don't listen to country as much as I used to but I still appreciate it. Oh yeah I really like Jason Aldean's Dirt Road Anthem. I'm not that crazy about the rap part but I love the chorus.
Really like this song here. I even think Kanye sounds good

To be fair, outside of Tim McGraw, those aforementioned are why so many people thumb their nose at what country has become and why so many country fans are begging for a return to the roots. At this point, Taylor is as pop as Rihanna... Beyonce had a song off her latest album that is closer to country than anything off "1989"

Several things IMO...

1.) We're still feeling the effects of the modern "pop" sound that was first gestated in the Disney Club era with artist like Brittany, Christina, Justin, etc.

2.) Country music has taken a larger piece of the modern music pie with it's infusion of "pop" sensibilities, which has made the genre much more palatable amongst casual music listeners who otherwise wouldn't give it the time of day. This all started when Mutt Lange decided to work with Shania Twain.

3.) Most modern music is no longer about creativity and originality. It has been white-washed, sterilized, and formulated for mass consumption. It's literally "McMusic" now.

I once saw a T-shirt that said "Help Keep Music Evil." I am 100% for this. I have always contended that music is at it's best when it challenges conventional wisdom. When it goes against the establishment and scares parents. The biggest issue with music to me nowadays is that it has been "wussified" so as not to offend and appeal to the largest group of people as possible, and I'm speaking as a parent of two young boys!

I read on wiki not too long ago about someone who did a song about the gash chambers. I think that's what it was about and it was like something was a gas. Is that the type of music you mean?
