Cannibals and politicians – what could be scarier? Fede Alvarez, director of Don’t Breathe and the Evil Dead remake, has two new horror projects lined-up, and both are bound to garner attention. One is a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The other is being described as “The Shining set in the White House.” And really, what more do you need?


What could be scarier than the current White House? How about a haunted White House? That appears to be the plot of Fede Alvarez’s new movie, according to THR. Bad Hombre, the horror-centric banner run by Alvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues, just signed a first-look deal with Legendary Pictures, and they already have two projects lined-up, with Shintaro Shimosawa as head of production.

The first project is being described as “The Shining set in the White House”, which I can only assume means it’s a movie about ghosts haunting the 1600 Pennsylvania Ave location. Hopefully, we’re talking historical ghosts here – like a ghostly Abe Lincoln roaming the halls and moaning, and maybe a phantom Teddy Roosevelt hanging around, too.

If a haunted White House movie doesn’t float your boat, how about a Texas Chain Saw Massacre reboot? That’s in the works, too. Joe Epstein wrote the script for the haunted White House movie, which Alvarez intends to direct. The Texas Chain Saw reboot has a script by Chris Thomas Devlin. It’s unclear if Alvarez plans to direct that as well. “We are looking forward to sparking a new and meaningful relationship with a powerhouse like Legendary,” Alvarez said.

Texas Chain Saw was previously rebooted in 2003 with the Michael Bay-produced The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While that film doesn’t even come close to the nightmarish realism of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original, I thought it had its moments. I can’t say the same thing for the follow-up film, the prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. I don’t really know what else you can do with the Massacre franchise at this point, but I’ll let Alvarez sort that one out. I’m much more interested in the haunted White House movie, just because that sounds like something we haven’t seen before.

Better yet, why not combine these projects into one? Leatherface gets elected President of the United States, and then has to figure out how to run the country. I’d watch the hell out of that.

I loved TCM 2003. One of the best horror remakes easily. Even The Beginning was really good. But the two since then have been bad. Like the article says I don't know what more can be done with this series. But considering I don't care for supernatural movies much I'm way more interested in the TCM reboot.

But TCM doesn't need another remake. The 2003 one was fantastic and this will not be better.

With that being said, I'll be there in the theatres watching it anyways.

The white house film sounds good. And to be honest, I'll still watch another TCM as I keep hoping they will make another good one after all these years. The 2003 was on par with the original I thought.

Yeah I wouldn't want it to simply be a TCM remake. Like was said it won't improve on the awesome remake we already have. So I don't know what they can do with it if they don't go that route but I'd be interested in a different story.

While I enjoyed The Evil Dead remake, I would prefer Alvarez focus on original titles, I really liked Don't Breathe.
What more can be done with TCM. As others have said, the remake was better than I imagined it would be and Beginning was good too but everything since has been unnecessary.

Well the Evil Dead sequel will never happen. Would have needed to much sooner. The Don't Breathe one still could but if that's not one of his next projects we may as well forget it. Not really sure where they could take it anyway.

Loved Evil Dead 2013 and Don't Breathe. Haven't seen Spider's Web, but I'm keen to see where Fede goes next in the horror genre.

Directors Have Been Found

Legendary has closed a deal for Ryan and Andy Tohill to direct a reboot of the classic 1974 horror film “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” sources tell Variety.

The pic will be written by Chris Thomas Devlin with Bad Hombre’s Fede Alvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues producing through their overall deal with Legendary.

“The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want,” Alvarez said in a statement. “It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.”

The Tohill’s first feature film, “The Dig,” premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2018, winning best Irish feature. It was accepted at the Toronto International Film Festival, and scored a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards in 2018. It was distributed in the U.K. by Element Pictures and in the U.S. by Electric Entertainment. The duo has also directed shorts which won awards in the festival circuit, and were named best newcomer directors at the Cornwall Film Festival for “Eye Line.” In 2015, they directed the short “Insulin,” based within the world of the BAFTA-nominated Irish film “The Survivalist.”

I don't know, I've been enjoying those goofy-as-hell Amityville movies from that VS box. Terrible? Without a doubt. Entertaining. Absolutely.

While Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) was far from perfect, I found it enjoyable. It was exciting and fun and the opening was excellent. It is a far better film than Leatherface (2017) which bored me to sleep. The only other films in the series that I genuinely dislike are Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994).

Rebooting TCM again?

This franchise is so all over the place. I don't know what more can be done with it. Unless it's something wild, like Leatherface tearing it up in a big city, I don't care.

I'll definitely go see it. But it feels more like an obligation at this point. And I think audiences agree, since the last one basically went DTV, with an extremely limited theatrical release.
