Default Questions about Indian films?

Indian films = Bollywood films?

I thought Bollywood films are those with musical scenes?

Recently I saw that "3 idiots", pretty enjoy it .. just there are some muscial dance scenes make the film looks a bit silly?

Do all Indian films like that? NO matter it's horror or comedy or action or drama, they always come with some sort of indian dance scenes? what about Bollywood films?

There are non-Bollywood Indian films (The Music Room and Monsoon Wedding, for example) and there are Bollywood films (musicals such as 3 Idiots and Laagan). That's the difference. Simple as that.

Well not all, but mostly yes. If you don't like it just skip it

Not in horror films i assume, not that i have seen all of their horror films. But the ones that i've seen, there's none. The dance and singing mostly in drama and comedy, even in action.

Bollywood Films are the films from India in which the spoken language is Hindi. There are other film industries in India as well ... they make quality films too .. but in langauages other than Hindi (Tamil, Telugu etc)

.. and yes, majority (about 99%) of Indian films .. be it bollywood or other languages, irrespective of the genre will have song sequences ... its just an integral part .. and will take time to get used to for a non Indian viewer.

I had watched few Indian films in last year in a club. They played horror Indian films mostly related to snakes. The sci effects are pretty bad and those films seems from the 80s? any info on that?

haha, you are funny. Would you like some Indian movie recommmendations on Blu-ray?

The snake thing is common in Indian mythological movies.

Having poor special effects and looking like 80s is even more common! New contemporary Bollywood movies have advanced a bit - they now have passed the 1980s and advanced to the 90s. So in the year 2020, Bollywood movies will probably look like a movie from 2012. The problem with most Bollywood movies is that they are created to be a quick fix of entertainment - just to pass time for 2-3 hours and not created to test time, which is why they are instantly dated right after you watch them. There are some good ones though out of the many turds! There are definitely more good Bollywood and non-Bollywood Indian movies released on DVD than on Blu-ray. The Indian Blu-ray industry is a bit wonky and slow.

There is no standard Indian dialect, but it's known that the quality of Indian films based on region goes like this from best to worse: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam. Although recently, I've been more impressed with Tamil and Telugu films than with Hindi films, so those regions are catching up.

Here's a few to start you off:

Jodhaa Akbar: just an awesome epic Indian film that is not cheesy and could have won best Foreign Film if it was submitted to the Oscars.
My Blu-ray review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/3...lu-ray-review/

Darr: a prototype Bollywood classic done well
My blu-ray review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/06/darr/

Robo: best sci-fi, action Indian movie ever - 100 times better than Ra.One or Don. Fight choreography was done by Woo-ping Yuen
My Blu-ray review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/0...lu-ray-review/

Magadheera: another awesome rewatchable action/fantasy film and a total visually beautiful film.
My Blu-ray review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/1...lu-ray-review/

The Blue Umbrella: just a perfect Indian (non-Bollywood) arthouse film that is totally rewatchable.
My Blu-ray review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/1...lu-ray-review/

Eklavya: Awesome Indian film made with Bollywood actors, but it's not a musical.
My DVD review: http://couchpotatofarm.com/2011/10/0...rd-dvd-review/

yeah, it's a really nice film. If that's grabbing your attention, then you would probably like Peepli Live too. I haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be really good:

check out the trailer for it at youtube - see if you fancy that one as well.
