Universal was in a tough place since they keep hitting the lowest of the big six studios the last few years, so Comcast bought them to try and help fix and restructure the studio. Battleship is apparently the first film in the line of the new regime, and I guess their new idea is go big or go home.

Here's a link the article I just read about it yesterday:

As for the new logo...Not sure how much I like it. It's nice to look at, sure, but I liked the one two or three previous ones more than this. This one is pretty bombastic it seems. But hey, as long as the movies they start putting out are good, I won't complain. It's just a logo. Doesn't have any effect on how much I enjoy the movies.

Lorax is the first movie that shows the new logo.

I keep hoping they'd go back to the old one with the plane circling the Earth.

My favourite usage of the Universal logo was in Waterworld. Rather enjoyed that. As for the new one, the idea seems to be to see how close they can get the actual word 'Universal' to the camera without actually going through it! Kind of meh.

Universal Movie Logo 1930's - YouTube
I was going to post that too. You beat me to it!

I think the reason Universal doesn't go back to that logo is because eventually that plane crashed into the giant RKO Radio tower sitting on top of the globe.

I like it better than the last one, though my favorite remains this one:

I even liked the music better. The one they just dumped I've never liked.

I like it and don't think it differs too much from any other incarnations. I like the way Earth looks real.

I also think this would work very well in 3D.

I don't deal with Comcast as I am a Canadian as long as the Blu ray releases remain strong I could care less who owns Universal.

I don't like it at all. The angle the letters come from initially seems awkward, and I don't think we need a super realistic view of the earth in a logo. I'd rather they kept it simpler.

Who the hell did the arrangement on the fanfare? It's pretty bad.
