Talking Westerns in 3D

So far only COMING AT YA has seen a 3D release. Supposedly GUN FURY will be released by Twilight Time later this year. Any thoughts on the neglected genre?

Wasn't Inferno a western?

Would love to see a release of:
Hondo
The Stranger Wore a Gun

Looking forward to Gun Fury! Comin' at Ya! and Taza, Son of Cochise were pretty dull but mostly great to look at. I'd love to see Hondo, and it would be nice if we didn't have to wait until 2022 for a Blu-ray 3D. Warner is holding onto some quality 3D Westerns in The Bounty Hunter and The Command, of which the latter faces great restoration challenges. Universal's Wings of the Hawk seems most likely to be next restored.

Regarding the future of 3D westerns, fingers are crossed that Ridley Scott gives us Wraiths of the Broken Land in 3D. Dylan Pearce's Iron Dogs is an upcoming low-budget indie with great 3D potential.

The story is technically more Film-Noir, but it has a Western setting. Great 3D movie.

Inferno takes place in the Mojave desert, but it's more of a film noir/survival adventure film. Those Redheads From Seattle takes place in Klondike territory in Alaska, but it's a musical.

3-D westerns are sorely underrepresented. It took 5 years after Dial M was released in 2012 before somebody decided to release a true Golden Age western this year (Gun Fury from TT). Hopefully, the 3-D Film Archive has some true Western titles heading down the pike. Taza, Son of Cochise is one that Bob Furmanek is trying to get off the ground. Hopefully, Gun Fury does well enough to convince a distributor that Rock Hudson 3-D westerns are viable in the marketplace.

Default You are absolutely right!

INFERNO is part of my collection. The reason I didn't count it is the fact of the modern setting. The cinematography by Lucien Ballard is outstanding. The import from Panamint is definitely worth every penny.

Of course HONDO is the best of the bunch but Paramount seems to have no interest. Makes you wonder why a studio would buy the rights to the film from the Wayne family and then sit on the best possible presentation not to mention the most commercially viable.

I think the one with the best shot currently would be THE STRANGER WORE A GUN directed by Andre DeToth. The star is western legend Randolph Scott and the villains include Lee Marvin and in what I believe was his first western Ernest Borgnine. Being a Columbia release Twilight Time would have access.

Your mention of WINGS OF THE HAWK made me smile as it was directed by one the great western specialists of the 1950's Budd Boetticher. Hopefully Universal will let Bob Furmanek and the 3D Film Archive restore it along with the rest of their outstanding 3D features. I still can't get over how great IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE came out.

The Stranger Wore a Gun does not yet have restoration. Currently, Twilight Time is only releasing the Golden Age pictures that Sony has already restored and digitized, Gun Fury being the last one. Sony has said in the past that they only restored the 3D pictures that they thought were significant.

As of 2013, Sony had not done anything with STRANGER as a 3-D property. We were told that it wasn't considered "one of the important ones."

Taza may have a good chance as another Kickstarter project. I'm sure Bob will find the best option for it.

Yes, even though TV manufacturers are no longer making 3D TVs, that greedy deluded fool Wade Williams STILL continues to think he's going to get a ton of gold for the rights to his 3D movies.

I only mentioned STRANGER WITH A GUN because it I was under the misapprehension that Sony had prepped all of their 3D product. I will be more than happy with GUN FURY.

Yes, I think you're right, it is a very neglected genre for 3D. Would love for Once Upon a Time in the West to get a conversion and theatrical release - never gunna happen though.

Thanks for the heads-up on Wraiths of the Broken Land BreedOrange11! Fingers crossed RS does shoot for 3D.

That makes GUN FURY number one with a bullet on my radar. WINGS OF THE HAWK would be nice if Universal is still of a mind to release all their properties but somehow I don't see It as being a viable solo release. For that matter REVENGE OF THE CREATURE seems to be more of a natural following the superb IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. I don't see Universal counting our niche audience as being willing to purchase say all their remaining output in a bundle or box set.

With the release of DIAL M FOR MURDER,HOUSE OF WAX & KISS ME KATE Warner Brothers has given the 3D fans the cream of the golden age releases. In addition I believe the conversion of THE WIZARD OF OZ is a gem. The only reason I would ever hope for more was an interview I read from Mr George Feltenstein who around the release of DIAL M FOR MURDER stated an intention for Warner Brothers to release all of the 15 features they had the rights to in the format. Times change and so do audiences. If the business has gone into another direction since those comments were made I will be happy with what I have. Warner Brothers thank you.
