think that it's not apathy or other entertainment options, but something else that Hollywood still hasn't figured out: 1. They've priced us out. Who has 25-30 bucks to just run down to the theater (60-70 if you're a family). 2) stop rehashing the same crap over and over |

I honestly think part of the problem nowdays, is that there's always an absolute glut of movies(mostly bad), and most people are overwhelmed by the choices, and underwhelmed by most of the big studio draws.
Also, while I think there was some great remakes/sequels/reimaginings done this year, I think people yearn for something new and profound. |

In addition to the ridiculous ticket prices, I just think people are watching more TV series and home media than theatrical screenings... And then you've got the massive success of video games like COD:Modern Warfare... There are just so many ways to distract yourself for a couple hours without leaving the comfort of your own home.

- less discretionary income
- Over price tickets - movies hit DVD/Blu-ray/Streaming very quickly after the theater (i'm sure they figured out that they make more more at home that way versus the a while back where it took a long time to hit home consumption). Coming out quickly means I don't mind waiting for watching it at home sometimes (tied to price savings for me as well). Plus people probably have bigger and better tv's at home than they used to and the home viewing experience is much better now thanks to blu-ray (often can be better than what you see at a theater). |

the math doesn't work for 95% of the people.
When Matinee prices hit 6 i was out. i'd rather wait for the video release, rent it, then {assuming it moves to the "buy" column} buy the BluRay. that total usually comes in for me at about 30.00, but includes a lifetime viewers pass, + any snacktacular activity that is always 30% of what it would be in their house. also, the cookie cutter film system hasn't produced anything worth seeing. my cash is better spent in the Criterion section. |

eh not a fan of 3D, i guess thats why i forgot about that.. im sure people will go out and see this, but i can't see whats going to benefit with 3D, only the boat sinking scenes will look cool, so pay 14 bucks for a movie thats on tv all the time for 40mins of eye popping boat sinking action?

gotta pay an $8 bridge toll too if i want to go see an Imax film so the $37 to see MI4 was really $45 for 2 people not including drinks+food $25
so a movie for 2 ends up being $70 -_- having said that i have seen all the "main" movies this winter except for sherlock holmes and the muppets both of which im still planning on seeing Last edited by X400; 12-29-2011 at 04:40 AM. |

people go to the movies to be entertained hence why movies that aren't comic book, sequels, blowing up etc, dont do that well in the BO.. but i agree with what you're saying

Well, I haven't been attending near as many films in theaters, as I used to growing up, and the main reason is that so much Hollywood product is filled with garbage these days. Whether its an encyclopedia's worth of foul language, so much sex that it would require a rewrite of the Kama Sutra, or enough blood to gross out every heart surgeon in the nation, the fact is that many films have changed, and not for the better. I used to attend movies at least twice a month; now I'm fortunate to go more than 5 or 6 times a year.

i'll wait for the Blu Rays rather than pay 1/3 of the cost of said Blu ray in tickets and another 1/3 in inflated concessions that include 3/4 of a cup of ice in your beverage and a "large" popcorn. easy pass.
FYI: if i could see Prometheus the way i saw Alien in '79, i'd go in a heartbeat. Dallas, Oregon - Dallas Drive In. they played it once, no one left. they played it again, 1/3rd of the cars left, they played it a 4th time, all but 7 cars left after that ended. the Manager came on and said "if you want to see it again, honk", which of course we did. he announced last call at the ![]() Ripley harpooned the Xenomorph as the sun was coming up. i got grounded for a week for staying out all night. i didn't care. Epic ![]() Edit: After the third show there were still 1/2 the cars left. i hate having ocd Last edited by Narcissus; 12-29-2011 at 09:43 AM. Reason: Specifics |

Yeah, for me it costs like 12 for anything after 12pm.. if you're seeing an IMAX 3D, you'll be paying up to 16-18 dollars. At least I can catch late morning shows for 6 bucks, which is nice. I pretty much don't see night showings anymore.
It's just price mostly, the masses don't care if it's a sequel or not, that's why most of them do so well and why they exist in the first place. |

Not to nit-pick but lowest since 1995 isn't a record low. It's just lowest since 1995.
And I doubt the quality or type of films being offered has all that much to do with the dropoff. For all the griping about remakes and sequels and comic books oh my! studio films haven't really changed all that much in the past five or ten or fifteen (or twenty or even thirty years). The bigger factors are more likely hits to disposable income (particularly among the age groups that are traditionally frequent movie goers) and the availability of alternatives to seeing films in theaters. |
