Quote:
The Possession claims to be based on a true story of a mysterious box containing a "dybbuk", a demonic entity in Yiddish folklore that wanders around to possess the bodies of the living. Em purchases a mysterious wooden box at a yard sale and becomes attached to it. Little does she know, she is becoming a vessel for an ancient malicious spirit that vows to consume her. As her behavior grows violent, her family is concerned for her safety as well as their own and chooses to seek the help of rabbis (starring Matisyahu as Tzadok) to assist in exorcizing the demon from Em's body before it is too late.

Here's a bit of trivia...the original eBay auction that inspired this story:

For some bizarre reason, I want to see this. I have a soft spot for movies about exorcisms and I haven't seen one of these recent PG-13 ones (for reference, not even the 2005 film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose). This one appears to have been edited down from an R-rating, so I assume it must be pretty intense.

Oh lord. Just got home from a promotional screening and oh this was bad. A lot of it was downright funny.

The characters we're totally not believable, the scares were tacky and overdone and overall, it was just awful.

Dare I say.....THE APPARITION WAS BETTER?!?!?

If Cabin In The Woods wasn't released this year, this would be the worst year for horror, like ever.

I hope PA4 is good but at this point I cannot believe I'm saying this, but based on what's been released, it would go:

1. Cabin In The Woods
2. Chernobyl Diaries
3. The Apparition
4. The Possession

And I can already tell The House at the End of the Street is going to be awful as well.

2012 is a truly pathetic year for horror.

I still have faith in House At The End Of The Street (at least there's eye candy) and Sinister

Agreed. Sinister looks like it should be good. Not too sure about this yet, I'll probably see it anyways. And then there's V/H/S also.

I just realized how hilarious the poster for this movie is. When will this and The Apparition realize that hands aren't scary?

Why do I keep thinking of a Bill Plympton cartoon?
(The original poster used the "swarms of bugs" angle, until that may have started to seem a little too Exorcist II: the Heretic.)

Normally, if it didn't have the "Jewish have demons too!" folk-demon gimmick, we'd be wondering, "Wait, the dad gets concerned about his daughter acting creepy and possessed? Guess there's a rule: If the kid's seven and under, then it's the A-list actress mom turning it into Mommy-horror, but eight to twelve, and it's the dad, like in Orphan."
Pretty much the same as parenting to begin with. Never can understand how the rules of these things work.

I completely forgot about Sinister. Though early reviews say its scary but unbelievably dumb, I'm still seeing it.

In other news, I cannot believe I'm saying this but my BFF wants to see this and The Apparition back to back tonight, so I said why not? Watching her scream/jump/piss her pants is worth the $14

If you notice where I live.

<-----------

Yes, the box is hidden somewhere in my town. The true story has nothing to do with the movie. They wrote an original story based on the Dibbuk Box.

The doctor that wrote the book now lives in Greentop Mo, which is about 30 miles north of Kirksville.

Just saw The Possession today and I thought it was a good bit better then Chernobyl Diaries. I didn't see The Apparition but now that I see Julianna Guill is in it, I will definitely watch it. The Possession wasn't great, but I did think it was alright. If I had to grade A-F, I'd give it a C, while Chernobyl Diaries would get a D from me.

There's a few other 2012 releases I liked, The Innkeepers, The Woman in Black, ATM.. off the top of my head. Sinister looks like it could be good.
