This is a thread for listing shows that are not episodic and instead have a story that lasts a season/several seasons. Shows where you can't help but watch the next episode to see what happens. I'm not talking about episodic shows that have a background arc (like Stargate Atlantis).

Game of Thrones
24
Heroes (season 1 is great)
True Blood
Lost(the one thing I didn't like were the flashback sequences.)

Day Break is a short-lived 13-episode series about a cop who relives the same day over and over again. Someone actually mapped out the conspiracy and it was way too convoluted and complicated for the cop to have solved it without reliving the day.

Most of the Anime series tend to do that.

The Wire. Fantastic show.
It more or less has the same arc going for the full 5 seasons

Battlestar Galactica. It's like one really long amazing episode.

I really enjoy all of the shows previously listed here. Dexter, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Shield, The Sopranos, etc

Another good show that I unexpectedly enjoyed was Veronica Mars. The first season was the best, the 2nd and 3rd were good too, but the first was awesome. Check it out, it's got Kristen Bell in it

The two that immediately come to mind are Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Those shows did have standalone episodes but they are both heavily serialized. As someone else said, most anime series are fully serialized and one of the main reasons I ever got into them. Hollywood is moving away from serialized television because standalone episodes fit their current business model better.

Haven't gotten around to The Wire yet (maybe this summer will be it) but The Shield definitely carried pretty well with a great ongoing arc that stayed focus the whole time.

I didn't care for Season 2 of GOT this past season only because it lacked it's own identity and felt all over the place.

I felt Prison Beak had one flowing story arc between Seasons 1 and 2. Three changed it a fair bit, but then 3 and 4 joined together.

I can't put Lost in this list as it did have a lot of 'filler' episodes that broke from the main story. Plus the last season was bullshit lol

I believe Falling Skies fits the criteria perfectly.
