Is there any issue with Blu-ray DVD’s causing them to stop working properly after a short time? The first time this happened is with “Disney Tangled” then “Despicable Me 2” and now “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. The first time the DVD is played it worked just fine, then after a few plays the DVD develops areas where it stops and produces video distortion and then jumps to the next chapter. There are no scratches or visible damage of any kind to the DVD disk. Disney had me send the DVD back to them for testing and they noticed it doing the same thing using their equipment, so they sent me a replacement and now it is working just fine. Universal also sent me a replacement for “Despicable Me 2” without having to send back the defective DVD and now it is also working just fine, but they seem to be hesitating even refusing to contact me to replace “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. Do these companies get their DVD copies mass produced in China or Mexico using inferior materials? I play a lot of DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs and they all work just fine in my Sony player, except for these 3 DVDs so far. Do you think I should replace my Blu-ray DVD player even though it played the DVD just fine when the DVD was new or should I just take the Blu-ray disk back to the retailer?

Blu-rays and DVDs are separate formats, you don't have to call them Blu-ray DVDs as it's incorrect, they're Blu-rays or BDs. So it helps that you describe them correctly when highlighting issues.
If Disney found the BDs defective, then they're probably from a bad batch, it does happen from time to time. Make sure your firmware is up to date and try a lens cleaner, it's unlikely that your player is damaging the BDs and not leaving visible marks, but it's possible. Also make sure your discs aren't stored in areas that have extreme temperature changes or high humidity. If your discs stop working try them in another player, the player maybe the issue, but it sounds like you've just been unlucky. I had a similar issue with Casino Royale, it looks perfect, but no longer works, I think it just degraded and it became unplayable, other issues have been reported and they're usually down to a bad batch from the factory of production. Some visually degrade and others still look perfect. Most US discs are from Mexico and most are issue free. |

I finally received a replacement for “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and now it is working just fine. The Blu-ray disk was the problem all along.

Hold the disc up to the light to check for damage.

Blu-rays are made differently and much more scratch resistant. It's highly improbable that it was damaged by the player.
