I would happily trade slower shipping for no sales tax. Unfortunately, the days of sales tax exemptions from online retailers will soon come to an end one way or another. There's simply too much tax revenue being lost for states to not find different ways to collect. Amazon has always had a big distribution warehouse here in my state, so I've never been able to take advantage of the tax savings. On the plus side, I typically get my Amazon orders within a day of shipment due to the warehouse being so close.

So amazon's answer to combat having to charge taxes is investing in more shipping centers to offer a semblance of instant gratification like you get from buying in stores; increasing their overhead rather than keeping it as low as possible to offer consumers better prices? I began buying online over a decade ago to save money. Now it seems many online vendors think the benefit of buying online should be convenience rather than cost efficiency. Personally, I'd just assume go a few minutes out of my way on the trip home from work, if the price is the same, if not better.
