Default DHL Blu Ray steelbook, wanting payment 1 month AFTER delivery.

So about 4-5 weeks back I ordered the Dark Knight blu ray steelbook from amazon.jp and I was ready for any possible import fees but the item came three days later via DHL and there was nothing to pay in the way of customs/duty etc. but now over a month later i've just gotten a letter from them demanding I pay them £10.17 has anyone else had a similar experience of getting asked to pay import duty/vat/fees AFTER delivery has already been made? if so what did you do? any info would be welcome as i'm not particularly happy about this shoddyness from DHL.

I don't want to get blacklisted by DHL in the future also I can do without getting hassled by future letters/calls etc. though i'm still pissed they've taken this long.

Not unusual in my experience. I looked into importing a guitar from the US a while back and the likes of DHL, Fedex etc. will often deliver an item that has duty/VAT payable on it first and then send an invoice at a later stage.

The advice I got at the time was that they were quite rigorous in pursuing people for these charges and would eventually issue court proceedings if payment wasn't made. Bear in mind though that the charges on the guitars I was looking at would be approaching £1000 so it would be worth them pursuing that amount.

If I were you I wouldn't pay them until or unless they issued court proceedings. I'd be surprised if they do given the low amount.

Can I just ask though why you're annoyed at them? You state you were aware that you were likely to have to pay duty/VAT so what difference does it make if they tell you know or prior to delivery? I'm sure you'd have been annoyed if they kept hold of your package until they had sorted out all the paperwork, received payment from you etc. i.e. until now!

Because I thought it was all sorted, it's annoying that they've suddenly decided to send me a letter a month later to pay vat/duty and i'd have prefered they made me pay before delivery when I was expecting it not a month later.

What difference does it make if you pay it now or a month ago?

If it takes them a month to sort out all the paperwork etc. would you rather they'd kept hold of your package until now and then said you can't have it until you pay us?

Well normally any occasions where import duty has been involved i've had to pay before my item was delivered so on this occasion i'm obviously annoyed they've taken a month to send me an invoice when they could have probably got it sorted quicker, and I refuse to believe a company like DHL could take a whole month just to send an invoice. Anyways I gave them a quick call and payed it off don't want any future headaches, also only last week Amazon let me keep a pair of Sennheiser headphones worth £80 when I wanted to send them back (they had some minor scuffs on them) and refunded me my money so it all evens out I guess (well not exactly even lol)

This is standard practice for DHL,
DHL pay the fees on your behalf, so you get your item as soon as possible..

and then pass the bill onto you at a later date

If you don't pay then it just gets passed to debt collection, which will blacklist you with DHL- pretty annoying as most of the overseas Amazon's used them - and marks your credit rating. The Amazon screens make it clear you're going to get hit for it I'm afraid.....

Sorry to the OP, but that's true. You got to pay it. Surprised they still do the invoice after, damn pains usually sit on it and you have to pay it before they give it you.

You really need to stop buying (or browsing for) Solid Gold Elvis Guitars....

Otherwise DHL really will be saying 'Thank you very much....'
