Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher’s 2009 LA HORDE is quite possibly one of the finest action films of the year. More than just another Zombie film, this seriously violent, relatively classy French horror comes out with all guns blazing.
The premise is simple; four corrupt coppers decide to take out a group of gangsters who were responsible for the death of one of their colleagues. They track them down to an abandoned block of flats, and after a shambolic attempt to kill the bad guys, it becomes apparent that there are more pressing matters!
The dead are coming back to life and craving human flesh – and it’s clear that if they are to survive, the gangsters and the coppers will need to fight together.
There’s some great realism here - the shouts of ‘we’re all gonna die’ ring true to me anyway! The action is relentless, and the ***** fight between Claude Perron’s Aurore and a female zombie is the best bout of pure savagery I’ve seen in ages, and again, reeks of realism (you wouldn’t mess about would you?). One man’s against-the-odds showdown with the ever increasing horde is a breathtaking bit of madness, and that’s one hell of a predicament he finds himself in... in fact there are more Zombies in some of the scenes in La Horde than in most of the Zombie films I’ve seen put together, the sheer number of them makes them terrifying.
I can’t say much more without spoiling the plot, but La Horde is a well produced, high class, action-packed, Zombie film. Look out for the caretaker played by Alain Figlarz, he’s such a character, and he kicks ass from the minute he appears on screen. The acting across the board is fantastic, and it needed to be because the direction and cinematography are amazingly slick, this is quality stuff, and I hope to see it in DVD shops soon!
I saw this film at both the Mayhem and Abertoir film festivals.
